How do you TV?

I currently pay for internet and basic (really basic) TV, it's $82 month. I also get Amazon Prime, Netflix, MLB and NHL streamed with my Roku. Time Warner Cable is now Spectrum here and they have internet only (60mps vs. the 20 I'm paying for now, but it clocks at ~30 on ookla) for $65, TWC internet only would be $70 if I drop the TV part.

I started looking around at Sling, Hulu, DirectTV etc. but then realized I can get most everything I need through good ol' apps, the network sites (flinky to the TV w/Chromecast of course) and/or Roku channels. Sure, I'd have to wait a day to watch stuff but that makes no difference to me. So I think I'm going to change to Spectrum's internet only and ditch the TV channels and see how my brilliant plan works out. If I can't deal with it I'll get Sling.

So, how do you TV?

I can't get good OTA here without going to a roof setup and that's not happening.

Just ordered a new Chromecast, either my sister stole it or it was actually hers and I gave it back. I forgot I don't have one right now though.

When that comes I'll call cable back and make a change.

I use xfinity/comcast cable on a 50 inch in the living room and a 24 inch in the bedroom.

My Sweetie's taken to streaming live TV on her tablet. No local stations though.

I actually don't mind commercials. A station has to make money somehow.

I do my phones and tablet for streaming something's though. It's hard to find 50's and 60's Sci-fi and Horror on broadcast stations. Svengoolie on Saturday night is the only exception on broadcast so far.

We don't have a TV over 28". Don't want one. Only place to put one would be over the mantle, and that's occupied by a signed print of Delicate Arch by Tom Till..

Have a 15" in craft room. Also has a DVD recorder. It's mostly used during football seasons. We record games and watch them later to avoid all the other stuff on the local channels. The Vulcan records golf on VHS, Says he likes the quality better. Since he does play, watching older tournaments doesn't bother him. He's analyzing golf swings.

We'd want more science type programs. The BBC had a few on Youtube that were really good.

Even the kid didn't care for the new shows before she married the Brit and left. She had series of Roseanne and the Golden Girls on DVD. Said some Brit TV was better. She got into Downton Abbey.

Use a Roku. They have a lot of the old stuff as free movies. You can check out offerings if you look at Roku programming.

Freeview (UK free-to-air broadcast). That's it. Don't feel the need for any subscription services.

Same here. Although there's increasingly quite poor content and choice on Freeview. Most major sporting events have gone to subscription services, and we get a choice of about 5 films, which are rotated seemingly on a weekly basis.
I sometimes regret that I can't watch major tennis events, but that's about it. I really couldn't justify the high cost of a monthly subscription service.

I do have a cable subscription since they are relatively cheap here. Roughly $5 a month for it and I get 79 channels almost all HD variations. I get HBO and some of its asian subsidiary stations like Screen Red. I also have 3 Fox Movies varieties. History, National Geographic, Discovery network channels. And whole lot more.

But I hardly watch TV only an hour a day max. And that's divided between me eating breakfast and dinner. And it's just to watch news and sports highlights.

I mainly keep the subscription in case I have guests that come over. Or when my nephew or niece visit.

Almost 90% of what I watch are downloaded or streamed content from Anime, movies and TV series.

FIOS Quantum Internet (No buffering. Cox sucks)
Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
Google Chromecast OG (Groupon $10 +shipping)
Amazon Firestick $26 (Amazon flash sale)
$7 HD antenna gets me 26 channels
Various apps I am forbidden from mentioning here :D
Redbox Text Club with discounts various times through the month
Library has some great titles I can check out

All this gives me more than enough entertainment for so much less than the $160/month I was paying 2 years ago

Personally, I'd rather read.

Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to concentrate on a book when the wife has a show on...

So I usually end up playing Spider on my phone while the show goes on (unless it is super-engaging)...

Since most of our shows are to both our likings:
Nova
Nature
This Old House
Frontline
News Hour
Washington Week
Baseball.
Smithsonian on the Roku.

I'd like to find the Golf Network on its own just for the Vulcan.I will listen while on the computer. I don't analyze swings.

PBS is antenna. However, the local tends to mess up, and we have to switch to Denver. Outside antenna and run programs through the recorder's receiver.

We cut the cable from mid 2013 to mid 2015 (we were using TWC high speed internet) during that time, we used antenna for local plus HULU, Netflix and numerous "free" streaming services online. Mid 2015 we got an offer for internet from ATT which we took for the savings. Then last year there as an issue and ATT had to grovel to keep our business. Part of that groveling was Gigabit internet service (which is freaking awesome fast - comparable to Google Fiber) and cable with Showtime and some other premium channels. We pay (for gigabit and cable) about 95 bucks a month. (It's heavily promotionalized due to them having screwed up bad). So with Rachel's phone (still on ATT) plus all listed above, we pay about 160ish with taxes and fees to ATT monthly.

We stopped paying for our TV license last year and we use catch up, Netflix, Now TV and Disney Life for the kids.

Freeview TV over here is crap and aside from the odd BBC Documentary, there's very little on there that justifies the license fee.

Agreed. The old adage that 'you get what you pay for' is as true here as it is anywhere else. The license fee is comparatively cheap, when you look at subscription services.
But it kind of annoys me that the BBC are wasting license money trying to prop up things like Top Gear, which must cost them a fortune to make.
The only thing that stops me binning the license fee is CBeebies. The kids can't do without Go-Jetters and Octonauts.

Well, like The Beatles said, "cut the cable, drop the cable, aye sir, aye" I have cut the cable. $16 a month wasn't a lot to be paying but I can get everything I need for free or with what I'm already paying for (Netflix etc.), so I'll take that $16 back thank you very much!

Ive.been temptedbt? subscribe Amazon or Hulu
I have Amazon Prime mostly for the shipping but do find stuff to watch, they offer a lot but some is duplicated on Netflix. The Americans is on Amazon - man, I love that show! I also really enjoyed Goliath and can't wait for season 2.

I just signed up for a free month of Hulu and won't renew it, there's just not enough there to keep me interested and I can find most of it elsewhere. I will watch The Beatles thing Ron Howard did though. I just got rid of my TV service so am using Hulu to get up to date on stuff I wanted to start watching (Empire, Lucifer, Sleepy Hollow) but couldn't find full older seasons anywhere else. So, I'll spend the month catching up then watch them on Roku/network sites as they are released the next day. It's one of my more brilliant plans actually. LOL

So, I'd still get Amazon over Hulu :)
