Under your bed
So for those not following along, I got a smoking deal dropped in my lap. A brand new Quite Black Pixel 128GB for $400 since a buddy won it as a sales spiff and is an Iphone guy. So I am off and running with a new phone. I have been a Motorola fan boy for a number of years but having tasted the sweet nectar of the Nexus 6 I knew I couldn't go back to a locked device. Plus I am on Project Fi so I had to go with a google phone for an "upgrade". As most know I was not a fan of the Pixel at launch and even less a fan of the price. As the days, weeks and months passed I was even less (even less-less?) a fan of the availability and fulfillment Google has provided. All that aside, I was intrigued by Google's first effort at full control over a device. And for posterity having one is nice. I like innovative devices. Still have my Atrix and my Moto X, they are special. I think this has the potential to be special too.
I will be reviewing the phone over the next little while adding thoughts and opinions to this post as they come up. I will be basing my review on MY situation, i.e. cost and carrier (Fi) and location (Kansas City metro). I thought $400 was a fair price for the phone and I will base my judgments on that premise. I have owned the phone for a little over 36 hours at this point and as I do sleep a little sometimes I am still really getting to know it.

PROS
Screen
: Amazing. It's a stunning display easily the brightest and sharpest I have ever played with.
Size: This will also appear in the CONS bear with me... but it reminds me of my Moto X it is the perfect size for any hand. Nice to have a phone that fits well in the pocket again.
Build: It's solid as a rock, very light but solid. The edges are sexy and smooth, the glass both front and back is seamless. It's a very deceptively attractive phone. (As a "hot rod" guy I appreciate it the same way I appreciate horsepower over chrome and paint)
Camera: So far so good, but the jury is still out. I need to play with it more. I can say this, it's faster than snot.
Fingerprint scanner: Didn't realize how much I missed having one. It's SUPER responsive and I like the gesture controls.
Speed: It's smoking fast, buttery smooth. Oddly, not as fast as I'd expected. I guess that speaks to how well the N6 has held up over the past 30 months.
UI: Vanilla Android 7.1.1 you simply can't beat it.
24/7 Assistance: I will detail this below, but WOW what a great added service. This is invaluable for those purchasing for a child or older parent/loved one.
Vibration: Odd to add this to the PROS or CONS but I like that it vibrates well in the pocket so you know you have a call but when I have it on my desk at work it doesn't sound like a bag of marbles rattling on a tin pie pan.

CONS
Size
: I think if I had my druthers I'd have preferred the XL, coming from the N6 it's a STARK difference in screen real estate. However I didn't have that opportunity.
Bugs: I have the minor WiFi thing. It's mostly fine but at work (where the signal is weaker) it sometimes drops connection, it does pick it right back up. Usually only takes 30 seconds or so.
Battery: It may still be settling in but I just made it through the day with the Pixel yesterday. Had 19% left at bed time, normally on the N6 I had 40+% on an average day.
Bezels: Huge, huge, huge and unnecessary.

Last night at 8 this was going to be a scorching review but instead it turns out I am just stupid. I was having the WiFi issues and then last night the volume rocker quit working. I mean it worked and then it just didn't. I was sure it was a hardware issue, I was ticked, I always hear about issues with new phones but have never really gotten a lemon in all my phones, So I was lit. But I remembered 24/7 assistance, so I tried it out. I was connected via chat with a nice gentleman within 2 min or so. He got my issue, asked me to go to settings, asked me to make a change and boom, perfect. So again ... I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH HOW VALUABLE THIS IS AND CAN BE to both new and intermediate Android users. I mean just a superb value added service.

So a day and a half in I give it 8 out of 10. I am not "passionate" about it like I was my Motorolas, there is (as yet) no emotional connection. It's a device, a tool and a damn fine one. Pardon my French.

More to come.
(edit added a couple pros/cons I forgot)

I was messing around with the fingerprint sensor gesture controls (I think this is what started it) but what fixed it was going into accessibility/switch access/ and then turning it off.

Best part is it literally took 4 seconds for him to give me a resolution. I told him the issue and he immediately gave response, go to settings ... etc etc. Awesome response.

DAY 2:
So after day 2 the battery is better. I did have a lightish day yesterday (ate lunch with my wife so 30 min less surfing and twittering) but even with that in mind, I got home after 12 hours off charger with 59% battery and when I went to bed around 40% so much more in line with what I expect. We'll see if this holds up.

The screen size may be an issue with regard to my sausage fingers. I occasionally have trouble clicking what I intend to click.

All in all still a solid 8 out of 10 maybe 8.5. I am enjoying this phone a great deal.

I am sad there's not more action in the pixel thread. I have to get all my info off reddit. :(

For me still cruising along. Not so much as a hiccup. I see why this was called the best Android phone of all time. It is. It's not perfect by any means and I'd still like all the things we all complained about at launch. It needs smaller bezels, dual front facing speakers, water proofing, etc. etc. But as far as the device itself? It's the best Android experience I've ever had.

I am a bit mystified by the hubbub about the assistant though. I don't notice it being any better than "ok Google" or even Moto assistant going back to the 2013 MotoX. It's not conversational at all, it just does web searches for me. I am confused. Am I doing something wrong?

I had expected it to be:
"OK Google why did the US enter world war 2?"
And it would answer the question, not ... give me a link to the results. Is it just me?

Anyway, very pleased over all.

Since the update no anomalies. I did the standard OTA and a restart and everything is perfect. I have not experienced the changes to my home screen others have mentioned, my fingerprint scanner is still perfect and I think the WiFi issue has been resolved. At least i have not noticed it since the update. I did the update on work WiFi and installed here as well, still got home with 55% battery. Not bad Google not bad.

Yeah, I'm perplexed too. Not only do the results seem to be no better (and in a few cases worse) than the original "OK Google" app, there's no way to customize your trigger phrase as you could with the older app. After a couple of evenings in which every Android device in the house lit up when the TV said, "OK Google," we went back to something that we could set up with differentiated phrases.

So I read a few people complaining about the macro ability of the Pixel. Honestly, I personally believe a specific Macro lens is a must have for "good" macro shots, but I thought I'd see what I could do stock and I think it's okay. Your thoughts?

I mean I can see the lint and dust (and yea I am bringing canned air to work Monday to dust everything off) I thought it really did pretty good. And again, color representation, depth ... Best camera on a smartphone I have ever had.

The 2 week mark.

I now have a proper case and my cables that I ordered from Amazon. I'll tell ya, with a regular TPU slim case this phone feels teeny tiny compared to the N6. I have to say I like it. This phone would really be special were it not for the WiFi issue. It only happens at work when I am on 2.4 GHz (I have 5 GHz at home - ZERO issues) and it's still only a momentary lapse of connection so as opposed to trading it in on an unknown quantity that is a replacement device I will live with it for now. Otherwise it's been a pleasure from top to bottom. I really like the phone and how it responds. I recommend that if you love the "Android Experience" that you either get you a Pixel now or hold off for the Pixel2 and grab one then. Google really has put together an exceptional device. And I'll tip my cap to HTC as well because the phone itself is really very solid. The buttons have a real nice crisp click I am not used to and I find it very pleasing.

Thanks for the review, it looks like a nice phone.

It is.

In fact, at 2 weeks, I'd give it a solid 9 maybe 9.5 (I don't believe there is a 10 and may never be, there is NO perfect) this is as close to perfect as I have experienced.

It would be 9.5 for sure were it not for the WiFi hiccup. Otherwise it's truly a pleasure.

OK I am officially impressed. I was up at 3:30 this morning (don't ask) and the Pixel has been my constant companion since then. It's been 12 hours, the most recent 7 of which I've been in a steel building (yes with WiFi but weak WiFi) and my battery is sitting at 60%. This is equal to or greater than the N6 was doing at it's best and this battery is substantially smaller. (Yes so is the screen but there are several reports of not being a great battery) I am here to tell you this size battery is suitable for this phone with this software. I assume (as happened with the Nexus) that battery life will increase with software optimization. Anyway, trying to keep the good vibes out there as most only post when there's a problem.

2 thumbs up - would watch again.

Thank you for all the details and continuous feedback on the Pixel. I'm looking to upgrade my Droid Turbo and it's between the Pixel and S8. I've only owned Motorola devices all the way back to the OG Droid and even the older flip phones.

Glad to hear that the battery life in real-world use is not as bad as I thought.

I was cautiously optimistic. I have been pleasantly surprised. It's not an exciting phone ascetically but it's as solid (or more so) than any phone I've ever used. Each day I enjoy it more. The battery life is exceptional for a battery this size and I can only credit that to a smaller screen and some incredible software optimization. I think the S8 looks lovely, it's the first Samsung I have liked with regard to the build. In general I am not a fan of Samsung. And I am still not a fan of bloated software skins over Android and I can easily say Samsung has the worst (IMHO) so ... if you came from Moto (as did I) I would highly recommend the Pixel. But it's exceptionally boring comparatively.I will take boring any day when it comes with performance, timely upgrades, and killer support, which is exactly what I have with the Pixel.

I think this is the reason why I'm leaning toward the Pixel. I have always liked a clean, uncluttered, pure Android experience. Also, I want a phone that works, not one that necessarily garners attention from others.

Have you had a chance to use the camera in challenging situations? Low light, fast movement, etc? Is the camera as good as the experts really say?

I can't speak to the experts. I can say it's FAR and AWAY the best cell phone camera I have ever used. Now take that with a grain of salt as I have had - in order - The Nexus 6 (Moto) the Moto X 2013 (Moto) the Atrix HD (Moto) the Atrix 2 (Moto) and the Atrix (also Moto) for the past 7 years.

So, as I am sure you know the "experts" all say those phones had garbage for cameras, but somehow I still got good pictures.

The Pixel, is almost effortless. It takes good pictures on it's own in challenging situations and I don't have to TRY to get good shots. 9 out of 10 just end up being good shots. And the one thing that stands out for me is the speed. I mean it's open app, shoot and review in one step. It's really really really fast.

One more question if you don't mind. I really enjoy some of the Moto Actions on my Droid Turbo. Two in particular - twist twice to activate the camera and Moto Display for notifications.

There is no LED indicator light on the Turbo and I've gotten really used to the way it shows notifications.

Does the Pixel have any sort of 'screen notification' like Moto Display or is it strictly the old style LED notification?

@Dabrador
The Pixel actually has both notifications, which I use. It has an LED which is nice for glancing over to the coffee table or when it's on my desk. It also has notifications like the Moto Display which you can check by picking up the phone or double tap to wake. It will then display the notification preview.

The double twist for camera is sadly not a part of the Pixel. However you can double tap the power button and it brings up the camera and it's lightning quick. You can also swipe up from bottom right corner on the lock screen to bring up the camera.

Again, it's the closest I have had to my Moto X, size wise and functionality really remind me of that phone except this one has all high end specs so it blazes through it's paces.

Well here we are. Almost a full month in. The emotional attachemnt is now here. I love this phone. It's really amazing how it feels in hand, how it looks, how it performs. The camera spoils me. Really if you have the means, I highy suggest you go out and get yourself one. This is the best Android phone available, and yes I am including the G6 and the S8. I have played with both now and really there's no contest. It's still not perfect, but I doubt I will ever buy anything that's not Nexus/Pixel/Google.

That is all. I am happy to field questions, but I know no one ever comes in here so ...

Anyone? Bueller?
