What does this developer option mean? Have you taken advantage of the option?

I wonder what this developer option means and why the option button is greyed out.

I am sure that the 'Developer Options' is enabled. And, I have a SD card and a SIM in my phone slot.

Does this option mean that we could install apps directly into SD card, other than internal storage, if it has been enabled?
Or does it mean that any app could save its data such as user preference into SD card, other than internal storage?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi James,

When an app developer packages an app, s/he specifies if the app may be installed to an SD card or can only be installed to internal memory. This information/choice is written into the app's manifest values. This developer option allows you to override the decision of the developer and force the app onto the SD card. As with all developer options, sometimes it will work out and sometimes it will not. In any case, don't expect any support from the app developer if you have this option enabled.

    Regards,
    Eric.

    Thank you Eric.
But I am not sure that why this option button in 'Settings - Developer Options' of my Android 7.0 is greyed out.

    Hi James,

Would I be correct in assuming that you have a formatted SD card in the phone? The card should be preferably formatted by the phone itself. I guess that you thought of this but always best to ask.

    Regards,
    Eric.
The SD card does work well either on my previous Samsung Note 3 or my current Huawei phone. Now I can read or write any files to/from the SD card.
I doubt that whether the EMUI 5.0 does not support this option at all.
