Phone: Nexus 6 running 6.0.1 with Feb security update. Rooted, xposed

I updated a bunch of apps thru Google Play, including gmail.
While they were updating, I tapped on a gmail notification and got the subject message (unfortunately...)
Gmail gives that message ever since.
btw, I noticed a new app was installed during the update (google instant apps).

Cleared cache in recovery, he help
Tried clearing cache and data on gmail, no help.
Cleared cache and data on Playstore, no change (Playstore works fine btw).

Google help forum from 2016 suggests to remove my email account from my phone

I'm reluctant to do that. Seems to be pretty drastic and not sure how much setting up I'd have to do afterwards. I actually started to remove it and received a warning about how device protective features would no longer work... that made me stop and pause and come here to ask advice.
