Help Why aren't my contacts syncing with Google?

Every time I add a new contact on my phone, it says Phone-only, unsynced contact. I have no idea why it's started doing this. I'm using the ZMAX ZTE Pro running Android 6.0.1.

I've got Gmail set to sync but no where in it's settings can I find anything regarding contacts. Am I doing something wrong? When I had the earlier ZMAX ZTE 970. I had no problems. But with this phone, sheesh. I could use one help here as I've got two phones, both Android (the Zmax and an Alcatel) and I also want to keep my contacts synced with my iPad, MacBook Pro and iMac.

When you add the contact, hit "More Fields" at the bottom and then a dropdown will give you the option to change to Google instead of Phone.

Nope. Doesn't give me a choice at all! This never happened when I was using the older ZTE ZMAX 970. Is there that big a dumb change between Lollipop and Marshmallow? If so, I think the programmers really screwed the pooch on the upgrade.

It's not Lollipop vs Marshmallow. They made a dumb mistake by defaulting the contacts to Phone only.

I'll have to experiment on my wife's Zmax Pro because I don't remember the exact steps that i got my default to change to Google instead of phone.

Well, if you can help me figure that out, I'll tell your wife you're the best. :)

My original instructions are correct.

When you add the contact, type in the information.

Press "More Fields" at the bottom.

Go back to the top of screen and press "phone-only unsynced"

It should be a drop down choice and then choose "Google"

Save contact.

Your phone should default to Google. If it doesn't repeat instructions above.

Did that. Doesn't work. That's why I'm stumped as to what the problems is. The only option I get, and then only sometimes, is Messenger contact. It doesn't default to Google and if it showed that as an option, I'd have done that awhile ago.

This is why I'm having issues and have no idea why!

I see the "More fields" it just doesn't give me a drop down. Only says "phone only, unsynced contact" no other options. I had to go into Google and update my contacts manually.

Check permissions of your phone app and contact app. Make sure everything is on. Reboot and try again.

Clear cache in contact app. Force stop. Reboot and try again.

You hit the new contact icon to get to your default screen. Then you hit More Fields for the second contact screen which has the drop down menu. Keep in mind i am on b14. Not b20.

I don't know what I did but I pretty much did that. As much as I could figure out. If it didn't work my next step was going to be to delete contacts completely, reinstall it and restore from the cloud.

It it worked!!! Omg, I can't believe it. I'm not sure what I did. This was the second time I force stopped and rebooted. Didn't work before but I'm not complaining now. Thanks for sticking by me with this until it got figured out. Here's hoping it doesn't glitch again.

I'm having the same problem with my moms ZTE ZMAX Pro. Something recently changed on the phone and when I try to add a new contact, the only option is "Phone-only, unsynced contact". After clicking on "More Fields", then a drop-down menu appears allowing to add a contact as a Google contact. This is very annoying and I've wasted an hour trying to figure this out before finding this thread. My mom is 81 years old and barely knows how to use the phone and I have to train her to do this extra step every time adding a contact??? Ridiculous...
