Help Randomly Turning Off?

I have tried it myself for the past two days and I haven't had any problems, BUT I have had my WiFi turned off completely unless I need it, because my dad reread the forum and said that the problem is not in the WiFi going into sleep mode, but the WiFi itself. Guess I misunderstood. Turning WiFi completely off has worked for me for the past couple of days, perhaps you could try that? I really hope Samsung notices and fixes it soon.

I have the same problem, but Im pretty sure it has nothing to do with wifi. It turns off itself no matter if I have wifi on or off. Ive heard there could be problem with the battery contact, cause my doesnt start up until I take the battery out:mad:

Best way to fix SOD, is flashing your ROM. Me and my friend both had SOD on Froyo, Gingerbread(bbth official). After we flashed to KPT, it fixed our problem. I've been using my phone for more then a month and it's really SOD free. News - www.SamFirmware.com -> This is the only way to fix it if you want to use your wifi always switched on. Use odin, and check two or three guide for flashing. I'm pretty sure it will solve your problem :) I hope I could help you guys :)

As of today, my Galaxy Ace is running

PDA:KS2 / PHONE:KS2 / CSC:KS1 (XEN)

And, believe it or not, it's Gingerbread 2.3.5 update, officially through Kies (Europe)

I hope this would not reintroduce SOD, since I was SOD-free since 2.3.3 KPO.

First couple of things I noticed:
1. Much less screen lag on wake-up
2. when SD is unmounted, generic android icons are not shown for apps that are on SD card - nothing is shown at that place until SD is reinserted.
3. Much faster SD card mounting.

I still get SODs even though i have reset, erased all, format, flashed, and many more.
I don't get thought. Since im holding a plain stock looking rom at the moment and still get randomely shut offs.
Could it be really a hardware issue then. I have always doubt it, but that is my only option now, to just go to the store and hopefully they will give me a new one.
Unless is the battery.
that's all.

Btw, i don't know how much it matters but my device is the Galaxy Tab.

My Galaxy Ace randomly shuts down after i have upgraded to gingerbread in Samsung Kies... Before, i had froyo, never had a problem. now, it freezes every few hours and it has nothing to do with wifi. it does it regardless of whether i have it on or off. and its not hardware issue neither, unless upgrading process fried few components. never had a problem before i upgraded.

Hmmmmm.... I've owned a secondhand Galaxy Ace now for a month. Bought from the bay of fleas. Great price, took a chance and have been delighted with it for a month now. No issues whatsoever AND starting to like it much better than my Iphone 3GS. Until 3 days ago that is!!! Yep, you guessed it - SOD syndrome! Let it happen 3 times in a day and then decided to google the issue and found this thread. 7 pages long and I started to read through. I got to around page 5 and started thinking "what's changed on mine over the last 3 days" and remembered loading Myphone explorer (which I have changed one or 2 settings on relating to wifi behaviour) but also fitted an SD card for the first time. I started to think - "I bet it's the SD card" and then stumbled across the poster's link to the possibility that it's the sd card! Well, that's that then eh? So, today it happened again after I left the comfort of my home wifi connection. So I formatted the sd card using the phone and crossed my fingers. Ten minutes later SOD. Then I removed the sd card and so far so good. I'm no phone techie but my money is definitely on the link between wifi AND sd card. All we need now is a proper cure.

I absolutely hate it when a manufacturer makes that statement "this is not a known issue, yours is the first record of this we have received". Feckin' liars! Last time this happened to me was Renault denying there was an issue with Aircon on Meganes AND clutch pedals on Trafic vans. Well Samsung - go to the corner of the room and hang your head in shame!!!! Even if its a common droid issue and not Samsung don't lie through your back teeth guys!

my phone used to turn off after every couple of hours. i upgraded it to the android version 2.3.6 and the frequency of SOD increased to every 5 minutes ( and that is saying something).
i was just about to give it to the service centre but thought of diagnosing the problem online and i landed on this forum.
after reading all the suggestions, here is what i did.

1) Settings-> Wireless and networks-> Wi-Fi settings( you can press the menu button to go to advanced settings)>.Wi-Fi sleep policy>turn it to never.

2) i formatted my SD card ( factory format and not a quick format)

3) i started turning off my wifi whenever i was not in range ( my wifi is still always on whenever i am in range).

i have no idea which of the 3 worked or whether its a combination of all the 3 but its 4 days now and no SOD.:):)..and that's a records :)

hoping this is d solution...shall keep u updated

Hey, I need to revive this topic...

Im still having problems with SoD.

My phone details:

Android Version
2.3.6

Baseband vesion
S5830XWKT3

Kernel version
2.6.35.7-perf-CL787041
root@DELL86#1

Build Number
GINGERBREAD.XWKT7

I was having SoD with the 2.3.3 android, so I've updated to 2.3.6 but I'm still having problems. It SoD twice a day, or more.

I did turn to never the sleep police, im using a sd card kingston 4gb class 4 (i was also having problems with my 2gb samsung card).

I almost never use the wifi, i dont know what is happening.

Does anyone still having this problem? Even with 2.3.6?
Does anyone knows how to solve it?

Hi All,

Over a year my galaxy S i9000 was running OK. Until recently, when it gave up on me all by a sudden. After switching it on again I found my battery was doing about 80%. That surprised me a bit so I came here to read about other users experiences.
I detected multiple issues in this thread are mentioned.

1) Battery dies very fast.

2) Sleep of Death - Phone is in use and freezes. This leads to resetting or shutting down after some time.

3) Sudden death - Phone suddenly shutting down with still plenty of battery power left.

Three different problems with all their own solution. I'll try to get some things straight here. Just start reasoning out possibilities to solve the problem with my phone. Maybe It's of any use for all you out there as well. I would appreciate it if any tech whizz could add more knowledge to this.

1) BATTERY DIES FAST. If the battery dies quickly there could be multiple causes
a) High power consumption due to software issues (either android or apps)
b) Battery life isn't endless. Maybe it's had it's best time
c) Some hardware defect (short circuit) causing high power drainage

2) SLEEP OF DEATH. Sounds like a software issue to me. Probably memory is getting clogged up, which in the end leads to a crash. This memory clogging could be caused by bad programming behaviour from newbie programmers (memory leakage) and not properly taken care of by the android system. New firmware could maybe solve this.
When I just had my phone I had this problem, but after some firmware upgrades it seems to be solved.

3) Sudden death... My pain in the buttocks at the moment. :( First I thought of some kind of software issue. I did a 'Reset to factory settings' to wipe out everything. This didn't solve the problem. First thought was flashing the phone memory (that's why I landed on this forum). But reading through these threads I noticed that it doesn't seem to help. I read something about SD cards being part of the problem, so I took of the cover to inspect the interior of my phone and to check it's inner integrity. Apart from some dust there wasn't anything that... Wait a minute... Hmmm.... The battery is wiggling in it's housing. It doesn't stay on it's place the way I would like it to be. It reminded me of my previous phone, the Nokia N73. It had the same crappy mechanical problem...

I took a piece of paper in the same size as the battery. Folding it's edge over the bottom of the battery a few times and jam the whole package back in to the phone. Now the battery stay nicely in it's place, pushed upward against the copper connector pins.

Problem seems to be solved... :D

Hello,

Samsung GT-I9000 turns off sometimes without any reason, especially when I am using facebook, twitter, internet etc. and it won't turn on until I remove the battery and put it back also it turned off with old firmware versions as well.

I find that mobile turning off issue exactly when my battery level is below 25%
Mobile batter isn't genuine one but replacement even I had same problem when I had original battery.
Maybe is something wrong with the charger, battery, firmware what should I do ?

Programs installed:
facebook, twitter, skype. whatsapp, barcode scanner

Mobile details:
Firmware version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9000XXJVO
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVH (if you need continuation tell me)
Build number gingerbread.xwjvh

Hi all, it's been a while...
I recently updated my S5830 to XXKPT (2.3.6) via KIES, and guess what:
SOD is back!

Again, as before, using Auto WiFi toggle app is helping, but still... isn't it just odd that once solved issue is back again in newer version of firmware update?

Anyone having the same problem?

Cheers.

Have you turned the wifi sleep policy to 'never'?
I use custom roms, and i don't get SOD there, maybe you should move to custom roms, they are much better.

Hi, I did turn on the 'never' sleep policy, as before upgrade. Still SOD-ing...
As for the custom ROM - what do you recommend?
I tried to install one with ROM Manager app, and bricked my Ace so thoroughly that I had to send it to repair shop, so I have some doubts about that...

You must have installed the official CyanogenMod(CM7.2), that comes preinstalled with ROM Manager, and its a very popular ACE killer :p
I am sure you tried to flash recovery from that and bricked your phone :p

Well there are several roms to choose from, it all depends on your requirements.
Look over at xda and flash whichever you like.
I'd personally recommend CM roms, i always go for CM roms, but your requirements might differ.

I had the same problem, factory reset or soft reset doesn't help. It turns out that the power button is faulty, it's shorted from time to time causing it to turn on by itself or keep rebooting itself indefinitely.

Here's a link I found to troubleshoot if the power button is faulty. It's pretty detailed and definitely not for the amateur. If you are ready for the challenge go for it.

Galaxy A5 SM-A500f, purchased secondhand. Used it many months before it started shutting off spontaneously. Definitely isolated to happening only when wifi is turned on. An SD card is never used in this phone. If wifi is off, it can run all night without shutting off. With wifi on, the phone started shutting off more and more frequently until it became unusable because it would shut down anywhere from immediately to within a minute or two after turning on the wifi.

My solution followed this trail:

1) Root and flash custom recovery. I used Odin with Chainfire autoroot, but recovery would not boot, so I immediately followed with flashing TWRP recovery in Odin.

2) Flash Resurrection Remix ROM at the XDA A5 forum.

3) Install SuperSU from Play Store. This reported root not detected, so I guess Chainfire did not succeed with root either, or maybe Knox or RR reverted it. So I followed the How to Root link in the SuperSU error message to flash a different root method. Follow with SuperSU update in Play Store.

4) Install WiFi Connection Manager from Play Store. Grant root permissions to this app when SuperSU prompts. Open menu, select Fix Wi-Fi Problems.

Voila! No more wifi crashing the phone!
