Help Music Not Coming Through Headphones

I am having a very frustrating problem with my new EVO. Playing music through headphones plugged into the 3.5mm jack is very inconsistent to say the least. When I first got the phone I could not hear music through the headphones (using the htc music app) at all. I could hear ringers, notifications, etc. just not music. I updated the software and it worked, though now I think it had nothing to with that, it was more restarting the phone.

Earlier today I plugged in the headphones and the music came through fine. The song I was listening to stopped, I went to select another song, and the music stopped working through the headphones after having worked just a second before. Again, I could hear every other sound but not the music. I turned the phone off and on again and it worked fine again. Hours later, I plug my headphones back in, and nothing.

As a background, it's not he the headphones I've tried several.
I can hear everything else, notifications, ringers, etc., not music.
The headphones icon is present at the top.

*UPDATE* I actually cant hear anything besides notifications through the headphones when this problem occurs including Youtube, FM Radio, Pandora, etc. Although I have manged to somehow get music to play through both the speaker and the headphones by fiddling with the headphones/speaker option in the FM Tuner.

*UPDATE 2* Remember when I said I could hear the ringer, notifications, etc. well, those are actually coming through both the external headset speaker and the headphones. I'm not sure if that is normal behavior but, it is strange. Either way, I can't hear music, youtube, etc. through the headphones.

Anyone else experiencing problems with sound through the headphones?

Any help?

Thanks

ugggh. So after the restart, I put Last FM on, it played fine, but my headphones lost sound after only about an hour (judging from my last post). If I unplug the headphones, the music plays out of the internal speaker, but when I plug my headphones back in, I get nothing. When I play locally-stored music, or launch Pandora, I have the exact same issue.

Is this an issue with HTC or with Android OS? Is it likely that rooting my phone and putting 2.2 (w/o Sense obviously) will solve my problem? This is a huge issue for me, as I ditched my iPhone to use this as my sole PMP. :(

I know exactly how you feel. Very very frustrating. I may be ditching my Blackberry/iTouch combo for this phone and if this part doesn't work, it's back to Sprint for the EVO.

As an update, got it to work this morning. Doesn't work now. It's definitely extremely inconsistent and I have not found any rhyme or reason to its inconsistency. I also have not found a solution at all. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I can't really fathom that a phone of this caliber would have a problem like this. It's supposed to be a media powerhouse and this is a beyond basic ability.

Anyone else come up with anything?

(Cross posting my solution from another thread)

The EVO 4G seems to have trouble with non-TRRS plugs. I've had all kinds of problems with a standard 3.5mm TRS plug going into the aux of my car stereo. Songs skipping, pausing, voice dialing activated randomly, headphone icon switching from TTRS to TRS intermittently, etc. These usually seem to be caused by jiggling of the plug and/or cable.

I searched all over the web and it seems to be a common problem. Headphone blocker doesn't totally fix it. I've seen folks suggesting trying gold plugs, shielded cables, and various other kinds of other voodoo.

IMO the problem is due to a cheap-ass headphone jack in the phone itself.

WARNING!!! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
-----------------------------------------------------

I opened up the phone, removed the tape from the top of the headphone jack and bent the pin on the copper lead that's over the top of the jack more towards the bottom (Away from the S ring and towards the R ring). I've had no problems since.

Your mileage may vary.

I agree w/ the inconsistency (and obiously the aggravation) of this issue.

Also upsetting me is that sound quality in general is not even close to being on par with even my iPhone (which I don't think has that great of quality to begin with. It's definitely no Zune). My songs just don't sound crisp, and the max volume isn't very loud, IMO. If I put my Shures in my ears, and listen to the same song (same .mp3 file) on my iPhone, laptop, and Evo, the sound quality of the Evo is abysmal in comparison to the other 2. I'm guessing this is a hardware issue.... Regardless, if this problem isn't fixed within the next 25 days, I think I'll be returning this piece and going w/ the iPhone.

I have an HTC EVO 3D and have had a somewhat similar issue.I had only used my phone for 2 months(factory replacement) and had bought a pair of Voberry (in ear )earbuds with microphone which worked wonderful for a couple weeks and then things went bad.I'd plug them in and I would see a icon symbol that looked like a phone laying down over 2 layers of dashes,3 on top of 2 and then I would try to use them for music or phone calls the phone wouldn't recognize they were present and all sound came only through speaker.P.S...I also tried other EARBUDS and same problem. Here's what I found out I did that caused the issue.GO TO PHONE SETTINGS,THEN GO TO CALLING SELECTION TO FIND AN AREA THAT SAYS;(TTY),,MAKE SURE IT'S (OFF)

My several year old Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II has behaved strangely for a few months: the headset jack will feed good stereo into my car stereo's (and my computer soundcard's) line input, but plugging in headsets of any kind results in hearing only the "difference channel" (Left minus Right). Also, when phones or an amp's input is plugged in, the phone's mic no longer works during a phone call - also a new problem.

Anyone else run across these kinds of behaviors?

Hi Friends, I had this same issue and that why i reached here. While reading some of your comments i made some changes in settings on my phone and it worked !!!!
Music was not playing through while connecting head phones and even its not worked when i tried with my friend's headset. I tried plugin the audio jack in many ways and also clean both port and Jack.
Root cause:
Actually the problem was with the volume adjustments while connecting to the head set. It was very low for the headphone output. (Basics.. huh! )

Resolution:
>plugin your headphone
>Play music
>Go to settings >> Sound and Notification >> Raise Media volume in Audio settings

I signup here only to share this resolution for you guys. I hope this will work for everyone!!
Thanks!

I know this thread is old but I have a LG tablet but this will work for Any android device. I was only hearing the music, like an instrumental and the voices were so low. Even on high volume. What I did was go to my settings and then click accessibility and adjust the sound to wither the right or the left headphones. Make sure you have music playing when you do this so you can hear the music. Either way right or left should do the trick but do it to which sounds better. If this doesnt work your head phones or even the jack might be broken.

I have gotten the same issue with my earphones on my HTC One A9 so I read through your messages though when I went to my settings, I tapped sound and notifications, then volumes and in there I found that I have put my music volume to zero volume and the rest(calls, notifications) were up. {I think this happen ed as I pressed the volume button with the that for power trying to take a snap shot} so I just raised volume and my music is back. Uuuuuyeh I have been saved. Thanks people.
