5X Dead following Oreo Update:

Hi all,
Well today, my much loved 5X has died. As I pressed send for a text, the phone rang at the same time from someone else and the screen froze. Now it will not power up and after a lot of research it appears to be none fixable.
I can access the recovery/boot loader options by pressing POWER + VOLUME DOWN but nothing will make it restart. At the bottom of the recovery screen, it states 'Device Status - Locked' or something!
I have called Amazon Prime from where I bought it from and because they sent it from an independent dealer, they will only refund me the cost of the phone (which I got at a cheap price at the time - £220).

Firstly, is my phone repairable without too much cost?
Secondly, if I put this money towards another phone, what would you suggest?

I've have owned Nexus' since Samsung Galaxy Nexus and prefer them to other varieties, I don't have the money to buy a new Pixel but would prefer a phone with a slightly larger display.
Please give me a few experienced options as I don't fancy another LG 5X after hearing reports that a lot are being returned since the Oreo update has killed them too!

Thank you.

Sorry to hear that!

Can you try clearing your cache partition from recovery? That may not fix the issue, but may tell us a bit more about the nature of the problem:

Wipe cache partition
  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power button at the same time until the phone turns on.
  3. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode."
  4. Press the Power button to start recovery mode.
  5. An Android robot with a red exclamation mark will display.
  6. While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button, then release the Power button.
  7. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe cache partition," then press the Power button to select it.
Note: This may take 10 minutes or more to complete.
  8. Press the Power button to select reboot system now.

Thanks for your swift reply.
I can get to "4. Press the Power button to start recovery mode" but when I then press the power button, the phone screen goes black and I presume goes off. I am then back to square one.
I am currently fitting my nano sim into an adapter to fit in my original Samsung Galaxy Nexus to get me by for now.

Oh boy. That certainly sounds like a hardware failure at this point - possibly a problem with the flash storage, though it's really impossible to accurately diagnose over the Internet. Replacing the motherboard may get you up and running again, though it would likely cost close to what you paid for the phone.

You might be better off looking at one of the newer OnePlus devices; they offer great bang-for-the-buck hardware bundled with clean near-stock hardware.

So you properly selected the recovery option? ...then pressed power to select? Just confirming.

Yes, on numerous occasions. The phone is now back in it's (coffin) box and ready to be shipped back to the supplier. I'm thinking about putting the money towards a 2nd hand Google Pixel XL. My Samsung Galaxy Nexus is back out of retirement until I can get hold of one, I'm hoping prices will drop due to the Pixel 2 being released!

So really, I might be better off just buying a new 5X for a lot less if there's not much difference?

... if there's not much difference between _________ and ________ ?

I'd honestly be a bit hesitant to recommend purchasing a new 5X at this point. The device is two years old, and it seems like a lot of them have succumbed to various hardware failures (yours was unfortunately not an isolated incident).

If you're happy with the 5X's size, I'd heartily recommend the non-XL Pixel. It's a similar size to the 5X, but packs top-of-the-line hardware (as of last year, at least) and a host of new software features as well. If you want to go for a larger device, go for the Pixel XL; the two Pixels are literally identical except for display size. Same other hardware, same other features.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, so it's just a matter of what size feels better in your hands.

Send it off to LG to be repaired. They will fix it for free if it's still under warranty. That's what I did with mine cause it would not charge anymore. They replaced the motherboard.

I had the same repair...phone rang, rebooted & died.
Called Google, they called LG, had a short 3 way call & LG fixed it for Free. Took about 2 weeks from start to finish....LG only had phone for 2 days.

I had Google replace mine as well a couple months ago. I'm quite pleased with how they (Google and LG) are handling the issue. I had mine for 18 months and there was zero issue with them doing a warranty exception. Obviously I'd rather have a phone that didn't break in the first place, but I've been happy with Google's customer service for all of my nexus phones.
