There was a similar setup i tried on my oneplus one... it has a couple of speakers at the bottom, that were originally described as stereo, but in reality ended up as both playing the same signal... It was a bit of a scandal at the time, and plenty of ascii was spent worrying about the issue... until a similar fix was developed.
The thing is though... it doesn't make any difference at all.
If you have stereo earbuds.. they sound great. The Left channel goes into the left ear... and the right.. well you know what that does
If you have a nice stereo system.. the different sound comes from both speakers.... and is picked up differently from the ears..
Hifi experts can spend hours positioning the speakers to get the best sound profile in a room.
If you put the stereo sound through 2 small speakers.. that are right next to each other, less that half a phone width between them, there isn't enough separation for your ears to hear the sound differently.. both ears hear the same, and you gain nothings (apart from bragging points for having done it i suppose)
There are some interesting bits of psychology that happen when you are watching a movie on a screen though... one of which is, that despite where the speakers are... which is where the sound is actually emerging... most people 'feel' that the sound is coming out of the actors lips.
