Help Connecting 2 android devices with a wire

Ok, everyone wants wireless but I have an android phone and an android tablet and would like to be able to exchange files between them with a cable. I'd mostly like to do this for instances where there is no wifi or when I would need to transfers larger amounts of files.

I have an Sony Xperia X and a Lenovo yoga tablet, and a USBMicro-B (5 pin male) to USB Micro-B (5 pin male).
I had hoped that the tablet would pick up an external storage device in the File Manager (like when you plug a phone or tablet into a PC and it appears in File Explorer. However it doesn't even register the device at all. The phone acknowledges that a usb connection has been made but doesn't say anything more and doesn't come up with the option to transfer files.

What I would like it for the tablet to register a usb connection to an external device but so far I haven't found any software that fits wirks with my tablet for this.

Is anyone able to help?
Thanks :)

Sounds to me that you need to update or download missing driver's in connecting the two. But if you was able to connect both of the devices to a laptop or computer you could easily transfer any type of information in between the two if needed.

My devices ... LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014). Phone is running Nougat (7.0.1) and the tablet has Lollipop (5.1.1).

I took a USB OTG connector and plugged it into the phone and then plugged in the standard USB cable into the OTG cable to the tablet. Both devices show connected in MTP mode (for transferring files) and I can browse the tablet on the phone, but for the life of me I can't figure out where the tablet mounts the phone. But, it's connected.
