Era of the self assembled smartphone: Crazy idea?

Theory:
In coming years pre-assembled parts, components and cases will be available to the public, who will begin creating their own modular snap-together phones, created by a combination of overseas high quality parts manufacturers, increasing consumer technical proficiency, and moore's Law.

Why not? I realize this may be somewhat heretical, and believe you me, I am the first to appreciate a design and overall UE and UI that are the result of a real craftsperson, with tight tolerances, and a streamlined design, but consider this.

One of the largest groups of tech savvy youngsters in history is about to dominate the workplace, parts are more available and cheaper than ever, and like lots of other technology, a homespun (in the beginning) movement is bound to happen sooner or later. When companies realize they can profit from this, they may begin designing a series of "ready to fit" components, and training an army of techs, who come to your house, ask what specs you want and snap it together fight in front of you in a variety of styles and colors.

The high end phone market while apparently strong, is taking serious hits from Chinese and Korean companies offering high spec (6-8 GB RAM, 4000 mAh batteries, and the latest Qualcomm chips), and some of these phones, while questionable of origin, ar a hint of thing to come.
If a 6GB phone with a 13 MP camera and great sensor, and a long life battery, is available NOW for under $200, (at least on paper, I have not held nor tested the Maze Alpha X) where do you think it will go from here?

I'd work for and invest in a company that had a long term strategy, these millions of kids who think it's cool to have the latest android or Apple product, will think it is twice as cool to make their own phone. They will probably hack things into the Mix I'd never dream of.

I'll make a running bet of $100 with the first person who agrees to, to a five year bet, betting that a self assembled phone will be on the market, and not a good idea with bad execution like Project Ara by google. I mean an in-home (or shop) self assembled, one piece, high spec smartphone.

Your thoughts?
Thanks.

Well, it really wouldn't be a market per se, but more of a movement.
Preassembled, I can see why that wouldn't work, since the factory models are already really good in a lot of brands. I mean the chance to make a phone to YOUR specs. I want 16 GB RAM, 3Ghz processor, 6 inch his res screen, and a state of the art camera. I think if components like that because available, that (I agree, a small part of the public) would jump on board.

Integration of hardware and software is the tricky part of it. This stuff isn't plug and play. You also need standard connectors, which need to be small, reliable and able to handle high speed signals - there's a reason why RAM is soldered to the motherboard close to the processor. The reason ARA failed is that this stuff is much easier to talk about than to do.

BTW you do know that RAM uses power? There is no way I'd want 16GB in a phone at the moment.

I'd probably design a phone that would blow up in my hand. lol.
I just wonder because so many things are become modular, like 3d printing, and there's a coding revolution, I guess I just wonder what the next disruption in that area will be. But I definitely get your point. It ain't happening anytime soon,
