Can't charge phone while turned on

I’ve just purchased an HTC One M9 Plus. I have a pretty radical problem with it. When it’s plugged into a charger, the message “Incompatible charger. The connected charger is incompatible with this phone. To prevent damage to your phone, charging has been stopped. To continue charging, use the charger and cable that were provided with this phone” is displayed. I find that infuriating, as the charger and cable I’m using were provided in the (sealed box) that the phone was supplied with.

If the phone is powered down, it seems to charge properly – the issue only occurs when the phone is on.

After a long time using Android devices, the truth is gradually being brought home, and it’s shouting “give up with Android, and get an iPhone”! Maybe that’s a bit unfair however.

Any pointers would be welcome.

That is weird (as in "I've never heard of that one before"). If you've just purchased it the obvious solution is to send it back as defective - all manufacturers, including Apple, have some fraction of duds. Though I'd be tempted to just try a different cable first - I've actually had far more defective cables over the years, including bundled with kit from reputable manufacturers, than any other hardware fault, and if you've been using android devices for a while I'm guessing you have one or two known good cables you can use to test.
