MMS Receiving Problems

Recently on my Android device my friend would send me a MMS message, but I will never receive it it never comes through not even after I shut off my phone later in the day nothing it just never comes through no sign of it. the weird part is that it shows that it has been delivered on his device. sometimes they come through sometimes they don't. Is there reasoning for this especially if they never come through?

Your profile page indicates your carrier is Verizon, just offhand (more about curiosity than relevance) do you know which carrier your friend is using? Also, is your friend able to receive SMS and MMS messages sent by you?

More specifically though, given that some MMS messages come through but others not, are you able to consistently receive SMS messages from them? If SMS is a problem too, there might be an issue that needs to be fixed in the Settings menu of your texting app. If SMS messages are not a problem, it could just be a matter tied to how different carriers have arbitrarily set different file size limits to MMS transfers -- if your friend has similar issues sending MMS messages to others too, they might want to scale back the default resolution of their phone's camera app so the photos/vids aren't so large.

Hello everyone sorry for the delayed response!

I am using a Droid Maxx 2 my apn is set to Verizon wireless the texting app i am using is the stock Verizon messaging app, and this problem seems to have appeared in other apps as well.

SMS has always seemed to have worked fine so no problem there. I have occasionally not gotten group messages which i believe would be considered MMS. This problem seems to happen randomly, and with random people so not one person in specific the weird thing is the picture or MMS that they send regardless if i shut my phone off etc never will end up coming through its as if the message itself just disappears even though people whom send the message show the message being delivered to me, and yes my mobile data is always switched on.

I agree with @Unforgiven. It is most likely your APN settings.

...even though people whom send the message show the message being delivered to me...

All that means is that their carrier accepted the message for delivery. The problem is you can't receive it. In looking at the APN settings for Verizon I see that APN has two options. Maybe you should try both and see if one is more consistently reliable than the other.

Open the Settings.
Select Wireless & Networks.
Select Mobile Networks.
Select Access Point Names.
Either edit the existing APN or create a new one

  • Name: Verizon
  • APN: internet or vzwinternet
  • Proxy: blank
  • Port: blank
  • Username: blank
  • Password: blank
  • Server: blank
  • MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
  • MMS Proxy: blank
  • MMS Port: 80
  • MCC: 310
  • MNC: 012
  • Authentication type: not set
  • APN Type: internet + mms

I am sorry for my lack of knowledge i am currently at my APN settings, and my settings seem to be correct, but the problem is I cant edit the access point everything is greyed out. Do i discard the current APN I dont see an option to create a new APN, and even though i am under the edit APN everything is greyed out.

I read some places with verizon locking phones APN settings?

Yikes! I just found a few articles on the subject. I had no idea they were doing that. Very cheesy, if you ask me.

I guess you could try resetting to default (although if you never changed them it shouldn't make a difference) or, which is what I'd do, is walk into a Verizon store and raise the roof, because this is not only NOT giving you the service you are paying for, but they are preventing you from fixing it.

Agreed I will pose this to the Verizon store it seems the only way to really fix that problem is to root the phone which i don't particularly want to do. The MMS problem seems to randomly come, and go most come through occasionally 1 or 2 may not. Do you have any information on the google play service OutgoingSMSListener?

Sorry, no. From the few search results I get, it looks like something in the API that allows an app to log the sent SMS event, but I'm not sure if that would interfere with you receiving MMS messages. You'd have to ask a developer.
