Hi,

I just got a unlocked Motorola G5s Plus 3 weeks ago put it on Cricket.

Great phone. My biggest issue is the last security update patch level is from June. I have checked for the update myself and it keeps telling me the phone is up to date. To get the update I have tried with wi-fi on/off nothing. Took the sim card out nothing.

Who is responsible for pushing the security updates Cricket or Motorola?

Sorry new to android. Recovering iPhone user =)

If you bought the phone unlocked from Motorola then they provide the updates.

Looks like there is a December update for the Moto G5s Plus:

Android updates are released in stages to everyone, so for example that video is dated January 9th it could be a week or two until you receive it. Or that could be from another country and they haven't released it for the US yet.

I saw that. When I reached out to Motorola they said it was the carriers responsibility to push the updates. I talk to Cricket and they tell me it's the manufacturer for the updates...

But there has been other updates as well that I didn't get. Sept and November I should have got those as soon as I connected to the internet.

A few months back I picked up a carrier unlocked Moto E4 and I intentionally didn't install a SIM from my carrier (Ting) for several months, using it only as a WiFi phone. Took a good month and a half for the monthly updates to start rolling in. Taking into consideration how fractured the Android update situation remains to be I don't really fret much over the matter. Updates come in in when they come in.
Anything related to any kind of online access is vulnerable at this point, if you're seriously all freaked out about online privacy and security, don't get a smartphone. It's simply not a matter of if you're completely protected and insulated even when your phone is 'current', it's mostly just an issue about when some already existing exploits are finally discovered and then revealed to the public. Whatever gets patched and fixed now is still just a temporary state, there are always multiple vulnerabilities lurking in the background yet to be exposed.
