LG G6 SLOW DOWN, HEATING AND BATTERY DRAINING FAST AFTER UPDATE

I am using a Lenovo k6 power and I face the same issue.

Version: marshmellow and android core apps (contacts storage) is draining my battery a lot.

I tried the following
A)
- turn contacts sync off
- clear cache and storage for contacts and contacts storage app
- turn contacts sync back on

B)
- uninstalled whatsapp
- reinstalled with local backup

Although I don't think it solved my problem, the battery still drains relatively fast

Hi,
I'm facing the same issue with my LG G6. I received the OTA SW update on February 9th though but it is the same one. After that, i am seeing same symptoms: battery draining, poor performance especially the contacts app, phone is heating quickly. When i check battery usage, phone idle and android core apps have the highest consumption. I also tried restart, turn off/on, emptying cache but nothing is enhancing the situation.
I am really disappointed since i loved the G6 and its performance prior to this update. I tried contacting LG support but they were totally useless and simply asked me to go give my phone to the customer support center for check-up.

Hello,
I've faced the same issues since the update. Hooked up a log viewer, and saw that WhatsApp was periodically going into a loop trying to delete some data. When it was stuck within the loop, loading contacts, or responding to the Call tap would take 10s. This persisted even after reboots, and clearing App cache.

This seems to help for me : Clear App Data. Settings : General : Apps: WhatsApp : Storage : Clear Data.

The loop doesn't show up in the logs, and the phone is more response, albeit not like when I first bought it. Hope this helps, though I suspect this is not the main reason for performance degradation.

Got the same issue on my G6 also. It took 5-8 seconds just to make a phonecall after tapping the contact number. My phone heats up and the battery drain is ridiculous.

Just clear up data on WhatsApp and waiting for the impact

I wish someone from LG, Google or WhatsApp saw this thread

Please help, I'm highly dependent on my current phone and not looking for a new one for now...

I did have 5 Google accounts sync'ds(though only mail).

Removed 4 this morning. Things may or may not be slightly better - but the problem (heat / battery drain) still exists

I meant "the user" which your mobile has option to create user like the image below. Not google account.

facing the exact same issues too!

tried all the suggestions mentioned here apart from factory reset without much luck!... traveling this week. will give the factory reset a shot next week!

Just signed up to tell you you're not alone.

I have these EXACT same problems, and so does another friend who has a G6.

Got the OTA update on Feb 10th too - 1st Jan 2018 security patch / Kernel 3.18.31 - (India) - and the problems started immediately after.

SYMPTOMS
- Battery (used to give 6-7 hr SOT) now lasts for barely 2-3hr SOT. See attached screenshots.
- Phone is constantly hot
- Biggest battery drain is "Android Core Apps" (note that Contacts is part of this)
- Phone is laggy
- Dialer takes 3-5 seconds to call a number after i hit the dial button (eg. on recent calls list)
- Opening Contacts takes ~10 seconds before the list starts to populate
- Scrolling down on the whatsapp list takes 5-8 seconds before contact pictures show up (used to be <1 sec)
- People who call me claim it took me forever to pick up, but I picked up on the first ring
- Developer tools > Show CPU usage > On average its ~15.00-21.00 when the phone is idle. Lowest i've ever seen is 9.00

THINGS I'VE TRIED
- Turning off SYNC (in the notification shade) - this helps battery life a bit, but isn't really a fix
- Clearing cache (Settings > Storage > Internal storage > Cached data) - made no difference
- Restarting (duh) - made no difference
- Uninstalled PayTM (since it was the app with the highest drain - see screenshot) - no difference
- Just (5 minutes back) saw that "Docs" was stuck syncing since the 13th. Went to the docs app and manually refreshed. - Will let you know

YET TO TRY
- Unlinking additional/secondary Google accounts (i read somewhere this might help)
- Hard reset / wiping phone (my friend is trying this at the moment)

I will say that the hotness and battery life have improved in the last 2-3 days. But the phone is still behaving extremely poorly.

Also another friend with a Pixel 2 said he was facing similar issues (with contacts etc) after a recent Google update.

Have you tried running in Safe Mode for a bit? It there's no problem there it would suggest that it's one of your apps that's having an issue.

And can I just echo luna's suggestion that people with this problem look at their power settings and let us know what the biggest power drains are: that may identify the cause, especially if everyone sees the same thing.

Could everyone experiencing this issue please go to settings>battery & power>battery usage and let me know what your biggest power using app or process is?

Just rebooted in safe mode. Yes! everything reverted back back to normal... accessing contacts etc. I switched back to normal mode and then switched my home launcher to EasyHome. things seem to be much better now  ....at least contact searches are quicker than yesterday....

So things improved in Safe Mode, which implies an app problem, but stayed improved when you rebooted normally? That's surprising, since Safe Mode shouldn't change anything permanently. Or do you think it was changing launcher that made a difference?

I think I have solved all the problems!!!!

I had the same issues, battery drain (android core apps was the third source of battery drain) and contacts app opened very slow (it took over 10 seconds to show all my contacts).

I clear up cache, stop sync with other google accounts, stop using nova launcher... but nothing seems to work.

And finally, I take the following steps:
1. Open "contacts"
2. "Administrar contactos"
3. "Mezclar"
4. "Combinar todos"

I dont know the correct translation into english, so I attach some screenshots.

In my case, I have many problems between my contacts in Gmail and Whatsapp.

After doing that, contacts are working as usual and battery is working much more better.

Tell me if this solution is also working for you all!

I had the exact same issues/symptoms as mentioned by Rehaan13, saideb79 and others.

I had it fixed by re-installing WhatsApp.

As mentioned by others, "Android Core Apps" was draining the maximum battery. I took a backup of WhatsApp, uninstalled it, restarted the phone. Observed for sometime (about an hour) that the "Android Core Apps" was not draining extra battery and my contacts speed was back now and then reinstalled WhatsApp.

Things are all back to normal now.

Looks like a complex issue with WhatsApp, Android OS update or LG's OS update. Cannot pinpoint further. Not sure if it will work for all but wanted to let know others what worked for me.

Cheers,
Anirban
