Who received their's today? Initial impressions?

I like it so far. Screen is really nice. Was afraid it would be too big, but hasn't been a problem.

My only issues so far are..
1. Samsung/Bixby voice recognition with the keyboard has been terrible so far. I don't know if I can change that to Google or will need to download a different keyboard. Haven't found a way to change it yet.

2. This thing keeps popping up that tells me that when I dismiss a notification, the badge number on the app will also disappear. Why would they do that? I dismiss a notification because I'm busy, and come back later. If I don't see a badge number, I forget I had a message to answer or review. If they get rid of that, I might forget I had a message. Maybe I am the only person who thinks like this. I think it is a terrible function. I haven't found a way to change that either yet.

What are your initial impressions?

Is this a Samsung launcher thing that puts a badge up for any type of notification? On my Pixel 2 (using Nova launcher) I only get unread count type badges, not badges for anything with a notification, and swiping a notification away doesn't clear those.

Such badges will certainly be a feature of the launcher rather than the app or OS (because the launcher is what manages both your desktops and your app drawer, i.e. everywhere you might see these badges), so using a different launcher would change the behaviour.

Ah, I just did an experiment: I fired up the Pixel launcher for a second and it did the same thing: if I swiped away an email notification the little coloured dot disappeared (though it didn't bug me with a silly message to tell me that this would happen - that bit of nannying must be a Samsung innovation).

So it's a Google launcher feature that Samsung have kept unmodified in their Oreo launcher. In which case changing launchers to one that gives you options about how these badges are handled will solve that problem. I confirmed this directly: the little dot on my email add disappeared in the Pixel launcher when I swiped the notification away, but when I returned to Nova launcher the badge was there, and remained until I read/deleted my test email.

I had a Pixel 2 for a week and returned it. I didn't notice this happen. I don't like it. Glad you figured out what is going on. I might download a launcher.

Have you had trouble with notifications in general. I have 1 app that I don't get notifications even though everything is turned on. I might try uninstalling and reloading the app and see if that works.

I picked mine up today and the first thing I noticed is the screen size seems like a bit of a downgrade from my LG V20. That's probably the only downgrade I've noticed. Seems so much quicker than the V20. I'm still getting used to being back on a Samsung and will find myself tapping the middle of the screen twice to try and wake the phone. I do prefer the power button on the back of the phone like on my V20, but it probably shouldn't take that long to get back into the swing of things with the Samsung. As for the notifications, I have an LG Urbane and I can discretely look at my watch and read the actual notification during meetings without looking like I'm on my phone.

Power button on the back? its on the right side, as for waking it, if you are using fingerprints, its just that to wake the phone, so only one touch required. If you are using the other biometrics, iris and/or face/intelligent scan then its a hard press of the home button, so also only 1 touch. Well that's how it works on my s9+ anyway.

I think power button on the back was the V20. But yeah, I always wake my phone with the fingerprint scanner (which is on the back of the S9) and so rarely touch the power button except to turn it off before putting it in a pocket.

I got my phone 5 days ago and I LOVE it! I switched from the Note 8. Weird that I could never get MMS messages at work on my Note 8 but no problems on my S9 plus (same carrier).

I'm saying I got used to the power button being situated on the back, like it was on my V20. I used to always turn my phone off accidentally when I would hold it by the edges.

Oh right ok.... well you do have to hold the power button for a couple of seconds before the screen appears to turn it off, so that shouldn't be an issue. If you do accidently hit it will turn the screen off, but tbh on the s9+ its hard to touch it accidently

OP, google assistant can still be accessed as usual from a long press of the home key when the screen is on. I use nova launcher so I can also access it with my voice with "ok google" when the screen is off, plus Bixby also works in conjunction with google assistant.

On another point battery life for me isn't as good as it was on the s7edge, to start with it was terrible, well i got about 14hrs uptime but only 4.5hrs screen on time, I guess its learning my usage as it has settled down and a bit better now, but still not what I use to get on the s7edge. It's probably the larger screen sucking more juice I guess.

Anyone with a Sam's Club membership know if the Bixby feature has been enabled yet? For those that don't know, you're supposed to be able to scan the items in your shopping cart with Bixby and check-out without having to wait in line.

On the s7edge i could create camera mode shortcut icons on the homescreen, so i had a folder with all the different cam modes in it. Was this feature removed at some point after Nougat? or is there another way to do it on the s9+, any of those icon shortcuts just open the camera now and dont set the relevant mode.

I went from the S8 to the S9+, and while only an incremental update, I am overall pleased with the phone. It is a very good looking device. I have a Clear Coat case on it, just so it's beauty is not hampered by a clunky case. When I bought it, it came with an Otter box case and a Zagg InvisibleShield, I just did not care for them. I had the Clear Coat on my S8, for me, it's the only way to go.

The phone is fast, does all the right things. I did not really have any issues with the placement of the fingerprint reader on the S8, I guess I have the Goldilocks hands. That being said, the placement of the reader on the S9 is more convenient, and, it is also more accurate.

Still not a fan of the bixby. It just seems pointless. I gave her, her fair shot. She failed, miserably. I have not bothered to set her up on the S9. I don't understand the point of the AR emoji thing either. Why do I need a virtual version of me? I am certain, the real world version of me is quite enough.
