Pixel 2 not reading new texts

I don't use this particular functionality often but on my old Pixel XL, sometimes when driving I'd use "OK Google" to send a text or read a new incoming text out loud. I've had my Pixel 2 since a few months after launch - recently I've had a few occasions while driving when a text would come in & I say "OK Google, read new text - or - read incoming text - or - read new text from <name>" (I've tried MANY different ways) and she always says "nope" (there are no new texts, no texts from <name> etc.) I *think* if I just say "read texts" she's supposed to read the last 5 texts - that doesn't work either.

I use Textra for texting, I checked my permissions & I think everything is correct - I'm still able to have her send texts using voice - but she refuses to read any new texts - or any texts at all. I've also tried changing back to the stock messenger, same thing happens.

Anyone have any ideas on what I'm missing? I know I can always do a factory reset, & probably will in the near future just for the fun of it - but I'd rather not do it just to fix this when I don't even know if it's just a setting that's not right.

I can't think why the message app would make a difference - the app is just a front-end, and the messages are in the same database whatever app you use.

I just tested with mine, and it prefers to display messages. Mind you I've told it I prefer text output to speech, so it doesn't speak in response to most queries - I'd have to play around to work out whether it's my settings that stop it (I rarely use Assistant at all actually, which is why I prefer it silent).

I tried a couple ways and assistant read my messages back to me. I use Google Messages , not Textra, though. Do you have Android Auto on the Pixel 2? That might interfere with text apps while paired to your car (are you paired to your car?)
Nope, no Android Auto, no pairing to my car (my car is old enough it doesn't have any pairing functionality except for pairing my behind to the driver's seat!).

If I can't figure this out I may do a factory reset this weekend to see if it resets whatever's causing this not to work. It's not something I use often but dang - it bugs the heck out of me that it's not working!! Although if I do a reset & it still doesn't work I'm really going to be annoyed :p

You could try clearing cache/data for the Google app first to see if re-initializing Assistant helps.
I tried clearing the cache & the data from the Google app, still not working. My honey has the first gen Pixel XL, when I get home I'll confirm Google will read his texts & then I'll compare our settings to see if I can find the culprit.

So... 2 factory resets later, I might have figured out what was wrong - although I'm not 100% sure yet because it seems odd I'd have unchecked this particular box (more than once!) - but who knows (there are lots of crazy things going on lately so I might have).

Yesterday I tried several things: I removed my Gmail acct & added it back, I deleted updates to Google & then updated it again, etc. & nothing worked. So this morning I did a reset & this afternoon I installed a bunch of my apps again, periodically testing to make sure it was still working. Then tonight I went through some apps to change various settings - & I didn't test after every change... somewhere along the line I lost the "read text messages" ability again but couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong again , so

Just now I did a 2nd reset & started looking at the Google settings I had changed earlier, testing more carefully this time after each change. It seems like I MAY have inadvertently unchecked the SMS box under Google, Settings, Personal that allows Google to search my texts. I feel like this isn't something I'd have intentionally unchecked, but in my testing just now with it unchecked - Google won't read my texts, but with it checked, it does read them (seems pretty logical).

I'll have to keep checking as I make other changes & reinstall my apps, but it seems likely this was the culprit. I'll update this thread once I do more testing.
