I'm considering purchasing a used Samsung Galaxy S5. What is the biggest sd card it could use? Is there anything else I should know about this phone before I make an offer?

Not sure what you want to know about the S5. I'm on my second; bought a "new unlocked" from eBay after the first one gave in.
I believe the max size MSD card is 128GB, though I'm only using a 32 in mine.

Where did you buy it? If it was Ebay or another private source and you don't personally know the seller, you may want to check the ESN to be sure it isn't blacklisted.

Unless you have a reason to be purchasing this particular phone from the specific seller, take a look at Swappa.com as it is one of the safest online marketplaces for phones. They pre-verify the ESN of each phone posted there and also require the sellers to provide ID-tagged pictures.

Currently, the S5 should be running Android 6.0.1 and don't expect an upgrade unless it's rooted.

Actually it takes the 258gbt micro sd card very easy, no lag..I'm thinking to go for the 550gbt or what ever the size is..though I've notice if I don't put the Samsung brand in, it gives me fuzz..I have two 128gbt sd cards if different brand on the cabinet because my phone doesn't like them..
I wouldn't trade it for even five free S9's..i could upgrade every year..but it's just perfect!!

Make sure isn't a fake one..there's a video on YouTube that shows you the difference with the real one..
Unfortunately the phone comes with A LOOOOOOOT of extra baggage that makes it almost impossible to work with..so if is the model that isn't rootable it's as good as paper weight(just my opinion)

As @Fox Mulder referred to previously be wary of who/where you're buy this S5 from. Use a reputable retailer or seller, or someone you know and trust.

If you don't know the background of the seller, be sure to verify that the phone you're buying is not blacklisted (some people dump their phones with open-ended contracts still tied to them) and that it works with your carrier (there are numerous variants of S5 phones, with unlocked models that work with different, but not all, carriers and locked, branded models that are usable only with specific cellular services.)

Well, that's good to know. The seller is a friend of mine but not very techy. The battery has apparently stopped working but the spare seems ok. Do you have any battery suggestions?

At least you're buying from a known source. Be sure to find out any issues your friend had with the S5.
Online battery sources will be cheaper but can be an iffy choice. Be sure to check the sellers ratings if you buy from eBay.

In the past I'd say to stick with a genuine OEM Samsung battery if you can find one. However that is getting increasingly difficult as the phone is long out of production and stock of these has mostly been depleted. At this point in time if you do find any for sale they are likely either fakes of unknown quality, or real but old stock that may be no good due to sitting around for years.
There are decent aftermarket ones but check reviews before grabbing the first one you see. I currently have one from Anker in my S5 that's been very good, after about a year in service it hasn't lost capacity and shows no signs of swelling. Unfortunately Anker doesn't make them anymore so I can't recommend it.

Why do you wanna buy an after market battery when you can buy an original extended one..they are wonderful..

The OEM S5 battery was 2800mah. There was never an OEM "extended" or higher capacity battery.
At this point the best bet for a phone of this vintage is a good-quality aftermarket battery that is fresh and hasn't been on a shelf for years in a discharged state. This means a branded one from a major manufacturer (such as Anker), and not a fake "Samsung" clone battery even if it's new.

Never went with the extended battery, on mine. First thing I bought for it was an OtterBox Defender case. And I couldn't find any that would fit the extended.
New battery may breathe new life into this, second, phone. I'm still using the replacement from my first phone.
