Help Win7 hanging when connecting Galaxy S6

Hello, I've searched extensively and couldn't find a similar thread, so if this has come up before, mea culpa. I'm having trouble connecting my Galaxy S6 to my Win7 laptop. I've used the supplied Samsung cord, as well as others to no avail. My usb ports function fine with other media and my phone is set up to allow file transfers. What happens is when I connect the phone, autoplay pops up asking what I want to do (open device to view files, sync digital media, etc). At this point one of two things will happen. Either I select my option and autoplay will freeze, or, if I select file transfer it will bring up my phone window and the contained folders only to get stuck perma loading with the circle icon. When this happens, the loading progress bar will slowly fill, but never quite finish. If I leave it for a few hours, it will eventually crash with no error message. Also, today it seems much more likely for autoplay to freeze as soon as I select an option, rather than allowing me to open the phone folder. When autoplay freezes, it shows as "not responding" in task manager, but when phone is permaloading, it shows as running. I've attached a screen grab of what I'm talking about. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You need to be more specific in your description.

For example you said.....
"My usb ports function fine with other media and my phone is set up to allow file transfers."

But you didn't specify if you meant the USB ports on the Phone function fine or if the USB ports on the PC with Windows 7 function fine. It can be assumed you meant the phone, but assumptions do not lend themselves well to technical diagnostics.

What's perfectly clear in your head, needs to be explicitly explained so that others who haven't had the opportunity to hold your devices and see what you saw directly can gather that specific information from your post.

Generally speaking, as best as I can tell from your post......

Try the Galaxy S6 with another PC and see if it will connect & transfer fine with a completely different laptop or PC. That will rule out the PC and or the Phone as the issue.

My first objective in your situation would be to rule out one device or the other to narrow the diagnostic.
