facebook on Android

Hi

I have switched from iPhone X to P20 pro. I have previously used Android devices too but i have an issue.

The Facebook app quality is poor. When we open any post containing more than 1 photo and then close it then there is a lag and for a second photos jump on each other before going back to their place.

Why is it that Android apps have this issue and lack the polish which iOS have?

It's not androids fault.
What country are you in?
That has a lot to do with it also.
Facebook app is probably the worst app in existence.
Use a. Browser or install Facebook Lite.

In Saudi Arabia. I know its not android fault but why firms provide poor experience on android compared with iOS?

I'm not aware of any, except that there's been many reports on AF that the FB app on Android can be a real pig.

But FWIW I have a Huawei Mate 10 myself and use FB Lite on it, and found it works perfectly and is very smooth, although I must use a VPN to access FB.

There are two possible causes here:

1) Facebook write bad software. I don't know anyone who would argue that this isn't the case.

2) The P20 Pro has some problem, or Huawei's software setup doesn't play well with the FB app.

I have the full Facebook app on my Pixel 2, and have never seen the problems you describe. The main problems I have with it are Facebook itself (i.e. its bizarre and inconsistent algorithms). Actually I don't recall seeing the problems you describe on any of my older, less powerful devices either.

Apple do however put much more effort into curating the App Store, ensuring that guidelines are respected, etc. That might mean that developers like FB put more effort into their apps. And of course there are only a small number of iPhone models to test on, which are very homogeneous in their hardware and software.

Do you mean that the Facebook software is badly implemented, or that Facebook in general is a bad thing?

I mean that their software is crap. I'd say this is true of both the android apps and their actual system, though it was only the Android apps I was talking about here.

Many people report that their android apps are battery/cpu/RAM hogs. But even on the web their algorithms choose what appears in your feed, and don't do it well (because if you visit peope's individual pages you can see what they've decided you don't want to read, so I can easily tell that they make bad choices). Some of the stupidities this has produced for me include my feed being filled with posts from people I rarely interact with while updates from people I do interact with don't appear (or appear days later); where selecting "most recent" posts commonly presents me with older posts than the default "top stories" (and only older posts); and where every now and then they decide that they are only going to present just a couple of posts and then leave a box saying "if you want to see more stories, add more friends", even though there are more updates on my friends own pages (no, Zuckerberg, I'm not going to feed your ad network with connections I don't want just because you play games like that).

Yes, I know that their algorithms are designed not to present you with the information that you need but to maximise your engagement with FB. But if they do a poor job of the first then by definition they will do a poor job of the second, at least with me.

Well I would say it's more or less spam, because FB are in the business of advertising, and pushing whatever they can at you. I'd say that's intentional, and not really in their interest to limit what you see anyway.
I suppose ultimately, nothing is free, so we're all paying for FB by accepting the crap they show to us, and by giving them valuable data about us. You've got to admire the business model they've built - rely on users to provide content, and simply collect personal details, in order to attract advertisers, and watch the cash roll in.
It's all marvelous from Zuckerberg's point of view. Not so great for the users who value their privacy, and don't want themselves to be monetised.
I've had an on-off relationship with FB anyway, and for me it's not such a useful or enjoyable experience anyway.

They probably hate me because I've never "liked" any commercial organisation ever, and don't visit companies' FB pages, post about buying things, or anything like that. It seems to work well enough, as they've never managed to serve me a relevant ad.

That's surprising really, considering they can learn a lot about you just from your browser cookies.

I'm pretty restrictive with cookies, and perfectly happy to use firefox add-ons like "facebook container" to isolate FB from the rest of my web activity (as I would never use FB to log on to any other site this doesn't restrict me in any way).
