Help SD Card Failure?

Hello,
My father has recently been having some trouble with his Samsung Galaxy S3, and its associated SD card. Apparently, about fifty-percent of the time, whenever he tries to call someone while the SD card is in the device, he cannot hear the person on the other end. Sometimes, the other person cannot hear him. Also, the device has trouble receiving texts - occasionally it works fine, but sometimes he misses about twenty in a row.
We've tried purchasing a new 16GB card (we didn't know if the 32GB card might be too much for the phone), and while that worked for a time, the glitches have come back after a few days of operation. Could it be that we need a specific model of SD card, or perhaps that there's a special installation method we're missing?

We have done a lot of research, and can't see to locate the problem. Any feedback would be great.

The MicroSD card type should not interfere with phone calls.
There are plenty of Android phones which don't even support MicroSD cards that have problems making calls.

Does he travel a lot? The topography of the geography where you make the call from matters. The phone needs to connect to cell towers. Valleys and dales can make a big difference.

Ya I second that one external SD Card has nothing to do with a call or text or anything. Youre external SD is for storage.

Hi Allen, welcome to Android Forums.

^^^ They are correct, it's not an SD card problem per se.

What you are describing sounds more like a connectivity problem. The S3 is a pretty old phone, inn terms of cell phones. It could be that some internal component has started to fail, or it could simply be the SIM card it too old or having difficulty being read. Without a lot more information and some testing on your father's part, it's almost impossible to tell you specifically what's wrong.

The quickest way to possibly fix this is to factory reset the phone (after you back up EVERYTHING your father wants to keep OFF the phone). Then it will either be fixed or, if not, then it could be the sim card, the network in his area ... heck it could even be electromagnetic interference from something that's new in his area. Or, it could be the phone. Are you on the same carrier/plan? And, do you have similar issues when you are together?

I can see the confusion - we were confused at first too. However, whenever my father takes out the card, even if it's in the middle of a call, he can suddenly hear the other person and vice versa. Though I do agree that some technology could be malfunctioning, this coincidence has occurred multiple times so far, and also works with receiving texts.
