Apps Creating a list that can be searched by a user?

Hi all,

I am looking to create a basic reviewing app. The app will allow the user to search for particular item. That item can be selected, the user can then review the item using the star method, with an option for a comment.

My question is, how are databases like these compiled? Take for instance, then Untappd app - it has tens of thousands of beers to choose from. Where do companies like these obtain these databases? (Particularly the ones that are also linked to bar codes).

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response. I am looking for beer, spirits, any alcoholic drink.
But I am unaware if there are any public databases available out there.

I would then need to be able to link these databases to my app.

The process would look something like; Log in -> Search via barcode or text [alcoholic drink] > search results displayed > select drink > rate/add comment > rating/comment is available for all other users of app to see.

I assume something like this is relatively simple to implement?
