Most of data (like phone calls log, whatsup chats) were restored from backup after reset/restore, except I lost all text messages. I thought they too are backed up to Google drive. Is there a way to recover them?

If you're using a conventional texting app than the app may have it's own, integral backup/restore feature but a really good, third-party app is 'SMS Backup & Restore:

But since you referred to WhatsApp, a proprietary texting service, you definitely need to use the backup/restore feature in the app itself:

One possible source of confusion is that Pixel phones do have a built-in SMS backup. But to be honest I don't trust it so do my own anyway (I just checked and it last backed-up 6 days ago, which means it isn't up to date).
But most do not. As has been said, there are many SMS backup apps in the Play Store, but obviously you want one that doesn't just back up to the device, unless you are going to copy the backups to safety yourself.

If you have backup of your text messages then you can check them. Even you can take help of some third party apps available in Google play store. Some of them includes SMS Backup+, SMS Backup & Restore etc. Apart from these solutions, you should also try some professional tools to get back lost messages after factory reset. With the help of such tool, you can easily recover lost data after factory reset Android.

I'm very confused!
I have text messages dating back to one of my earliest Android phones--and I've never done anything but let Google back everything up.
I've never used, or even installed, a 3rd-party app, nor have I done anything special. When setting up a new device, like the one I'm typing on, I choose Google's 'backup and sync' and that's that--all my old text messages are there.
What am I missing?

it depends on what app you are suing for text messages. if you are using google or samsung then they automatically back them up. not sure on other apps though.I'm very confused!

I thought that Google backing up SMS was only available on some phones: in fact if you look at Google's documentation it's only Pixels.
Of course if you use one of these "transfer your data to your new phone" apps that most phones come with these days that will copy SMS (we did that for my wife's phone 4 years ago, though ironically Google's version failed when I tried to use it for my Pixel the following year). But that wouldn't help the OP, who lost their messages following a reset.
Personally I prefer not to rely on "the cloud", i.e. some corporation's server. I might use such a thing as a secondary backup (though I would also perfectly understand someone choosing not to for privacy reasons), but for anything of any importance I will have my own backup under my own control.
