Root New "Root" Method For Z981(Zmax Pro)

I may stand corrected, as I am not very familiar with the device.
Can @bcrichster confirm?

I think the ROM he's running (Zmax Pro) and the ROM he linked (OG Zmax) may accidentally be from 2 different threads.. CuZ the Settings would have the model# Z790 labeled and 'draconis' would also be labeled in ROM file name..

I understand. It should go without saying that there are indeed risks. I just erred on the side of caution based on bcrichers post.

If you're looking for other ROMs I found 2 that are for the Z981. AOSPExtended which is based on android 8.1. The current ROM I am using is ResurrectionRemix which is based on android 7.1.2. Just be sure to flash Magisk and gapps after you install and before you restart. Use this link to download Gapps: https://opengapps.org/

Kinda laggy also no camera I noticed. Kinda want to try the other one. Reading about the boot unlocked

hey i downloaded magisk-master.zip and tried to flash it in recovery, but keep getting the error message Invalid zip file format!,
i also get the same error message with the mktool-master.zip file as well
Nevermind figured to just download the stable version and used the adb sideload while in recovery. worked like a charm even using linux mint os

Just a heads up, mktool is not a flashable zip. You unzip it in your linux pc for working on boot images.

Guys... I can't thank you enough... You have no idea how long and hard I've been searching for a way to root this device... As a 15 year old (probably the youngest here) this means a lot to me. Thank you so much!!!

Okay everyone, new problem. I've installed AOSPExtended, but when trying to install Gapps, each time it froze TWRP, so I had to skip it. Then I installed Magisk, that worked okay as well. I went to SafetyNet Check, however, and it gave me "SafetyNet API error." What's wrong? I have another question too.

Where should I find the right Gapps to install through apks instead, since flashing Gapps isn't working (or a way to not flash and freeze)?

All the roms are pretty unstable. The only one you can get fully working without issues is the LineageOS rom. As for gapps, make sure to flash the right ones, and I recommend nano or micro.

Here's the thread for the one I flashed...
https://androidforums.com/threads/rom-unofficial-lineage-os-14-1-for-zte-zmax-pro.1285631/

Right after flashing it do not reboot to android without flashing gapps and magisk first. Gapps arm64/7.1/nano or micro. Any fixes for the rom are located within that thread. I will also be posting a new thread in the coming days with a custom kernel I built for lineageOS rom, so keep an eye out for that if interested.

Good luck ;)

Thanks, it worked! I almost thought it didn't after it took about 5 minutes to boot up, stuck on the Lineage animation, but it finally worked!! One thing though, as I approached the "add fingerprint" part of setup, the screen suddenly went black before I could click add fingerprint. What just happened, do you know? My phone is kinda hot, is that it?

Edit
Wow, now it's frozen on the Lineage animation, except it's not animating...

Oh yeah a new rom flash takes long at the boot animation(usually about 5 minutes). Not sure what went wrong. When I got to fingerprint part, I skipped it and set it up later. Your phone being hot is normal since you just finished flashing a rom which runs the cpu at max.

Worst case you'll have to try and reflash the rom, gapps, and magisk again. Or even worse, go back to stock. Hopefully it works out for you.
