Recommend a phone to someone who wants to switch from iPhone

Well, that would be a big switch for you but, there are many other options available in the market that you can opt for over iPhone.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro: Huawei is competing effectively in the smartphone market. Its new Mate 20 Pro has several features to offer ( Similar to that of iPhone) and that too at a much lower price.

OnePlus 6T: OnePlus is manufacturing one of the most efficient and excellent smartphones. This gadget is a must-buy because of its ample features. It is available in cool colour variants and has a super sleek design (sleeker than any other iPhone).

Talking about the recent trends, if we compare Huawei Mate 20 Pro with iPhone XS Max or OnePlus 6T with iPhone XS Max, Android would be a good option unless you are an ardent Apple lover.

There is no one phone. It really depends on what the person wants from a phone. Even then it might depend on tastes (e.g. if you like over-saturated, over-processed photos you will want a different phone from if you want something more realistic).

Ask them what they want in a phone, what their budget is, and then make sure they look at and handle the thing for real before buying, would be my advice. It doesn't matter what other people think about it if it doesn't appeal to them.

And they should expect a period of frustration: android will work differently from iOS, and the first things they'll notice are the things that don't work the way they expect. The extra things you can do or the things that are simpler will take longer to find.

Agree with @Hadron Every one of us use our phones for a really wide range of things so some feature that's vital to some is irrelevant to others. Without a lot more details about what your specific needs and expectations actually are, there really isn't any way to make really relevant suggestions. I could make a recommendation but it would be based on my preferences, not yours.

Also, switching away from an iPhone to Android isn't going to be a smooth transition. There's a considerable amount of prep work on your part to migrate your data and info over, and even after all that don't forget there are a number of issues that will involve compromises (i.e. iMessage and FaceTime are Apple-only services).

Again, that's a very subjective question without any context. The 'best' Android phone will be the one that best fits your individual needs and expectations. The issue being, there's a lot more diversity and choice with Android phones so there's is no absolute 'best' that qualifies for everyone.

Is budget a factor? There are lot of really viable phones in the $100-$200 range like a Moto G6 or Nokia 6.1. Are you focused on staying current with the latest Android version and security patches? A Google Pixel or flagship Samsung S or Note will be more appropriate as other manufacturers may or may not follow the same upgrade/update policy (and that applies more on specific phone models, much less on brand). Do you do a lot of gaming? Budget class phones won't be suitable, you'll be happier with a higher end phone with ample system resources. And some people put a priority just on the camera, a very subjective topic muddled even more by the variances tied to different phones relying on different camera modules (hardware) using different camera apps (software).
