Help How to run on root

Maybe I'm missing something, but i was under the understanding that an updated magisk root would be able to block the invasive file scanning feature of PoGo to allow it to run properly again on a rooted phone. Yet on both of my rooted Note 3 and Note 4 phones, running this root, it won't even let me launch, let alone log in and run. This especially sucks, because i was hoping to set one of these up so my wife could run the game, seeing as she insists on sticking with her Lumia 550 as her phone of choice. What is it that I'm missing? I've already enabled the hiding feature in magisk hide and it verifies safety mode on both phones. I even tried the "hide magisk" itself which apparently makes a new install under a new package name. Yet the furthest i can go is from a fresh install, log in for a few seconds before it just blocks my input and gives me the "this device or os is incompatible with pokemon go", which is a load of garbage in my opinion... Especially since one needs to root and have custom recovery to run a new enough Android on these phones. And "just buy another phone" is such a waste of money i refuse to do. All i could find on the matter is just people on xda parroting that "new magisk can make it work", but nobody says HOW i gotta configure things to actually make it work!

There's information about how to play it with root, but it all dates from 2016. So I guess non is relevant anymore for current versions, and nobody has bothered since. Either it's now impossible due to updates and Niantic been more determined, or there's just no interest these days.

Is Pokemon Go still a thing, are people actually still playing it?

It very much is, especially with its connectivity to let's go pikachu and eevee games on the Switch. Can shortcut completing the pokedex pretty quickly that way.
