Missed Call Notification When Tapped Opens Stock Dialer and not Third Party Dialer...

So I updated from Marshmallow to Oreo and have had to iron out a few kinks since upgrading. One of the kinks that I've been unable to iron out is how my device handles missed calls. I don't use the stock dialer that comes with Marshmallow and now Oreo, I think it's just horrible and disorganized. I use a custom dialer app from the Play Store called TruePhone. I've used it for years without issue and greatly love it for the power and customization settings.

The problem that I seem to be having is that when I miss a call and appears in the notification shade, I'm given three choices. To either Call Back, Message or I can tap on it. If I select Call Back it takes me to TruePhone. I don't normally Message people from the notification shade. But if I tap on it rather than take me to the Recent Calls page of TruePhone it takes me to the Recent Calls page of the stock dialer. Then I have to get out of the stock dialer and get into TruePhone.

Does anyone have any idea how to just route the notification to your custom dialer???

Okay, an update. I got it figured out how to have the notification hand calls off to my preferred dialer, TruePhone. Turns out I had to select the stock dialer, go into App Info and then select PHone App. Then in Configure Apps designate TruePhone as the default app. The problem that I'm having now is that the missed count call number in the notification isn't always correct. Is there a way to just not display the missed call count or otherwise reset it so that it's correct?

Well I've done the third factory reset this year, once in January and now twice in February and still nothing. The voicemail indicator will come back immediately following the factory reset, but once I clear it (I've been putting a test message on it from my line at work) then I'll call my cell and leave a new test message and nothing.

I've reset the voicemail through my provider Cricket...
The first and second time I did a factory reset I was greeted at the beginning of set up with the option to do a total/fresh rebuild OR to use some kind of Google backup that had been made to speed things along. I used the backup and it formatted things, placed things, filled in pictures for the lockscreen and the home screen and set all the settings. I thought that maybe if whatever the problem was had been backed up then the problem just carries and gets put back into the phone after the reset... So the third time I did a factory reset I elected to go with a total/fresh rebuild. The only thing that I used from backup was icon placement in Nova and also my music player. I doubt seriously either Nova or my music player would have anything to do with voicemail so I felt pretty safe. The voicemail icon came back, I cleared it with clearing my test message, but since leaving a new test message a few hours ago it hasn't returned.

This has been resolved using a work around via Visual Voicemail from my provider... Actually VV isn't so bad, instead of blindly fumbling my way through voivvoice, I can now listen to it in whatever order that I want and use the scribble line to go back if I should miss a bit of what someone says...

Voicemail notification is a separate icon altogether that shows up in the status bar area. Tesla never handles that.

I'd wondered about this, too. I've been missing notifications from Verizons visual voicemail as well.
Now I know.

As for the original question, could be a setting in the third party dialer.

What was the work around?
I'd love to get my badge back too.

I installed and started using the Visual Voicemail app from my service provider Cricket. Without it I'm still not getting the voicemail notification but with it installed and running I've been getting all my messages. If you don't like the one from Verizon then try one of the others in the Play Store. There are a few that are independent and you'll need the phone number that you call to get your voicemail in order to set it up. I've only ever used the one from Cricket so I can't speak to how user friendly or versatile the third party ones are.
