Root New "Root" Method For Z981(Zmax Pro)

Please, grick, I need an answer. It's been an hour now.
Somewhere along the lines you may have missed a step. Do the following in this order.
  1. Go into recovery
  2. Do a factory reset including wiping internal sd.
  3. Flash Lineage OS 14.1 rom
  4. Flash opengapps arm64 7.1 nano or micro
  5. Flash magisk
  6. Reboot and enjoy!

HUGE thanks! But would you please explain how to accomplish step two? The official factory reset doesn't work because I can't shut the power off.

If you're stuck in a boot-loop, just hold the power button till the screen goes dark then immediately let go then immediately hold power and volume up till you see the twrp recovery.

I knew how to get there, but I don't know how to perform step 2. If i perform the default wipe, I'm still stuck in the boot loop. If I select Advanced Wipe, I don't know which partitions to select. In any case, I cannot select "System".

In advanced wipe select the following:
  • Dalvik/Art Cache
  • System
  • Data
  • Internal Storage
  • Cache
If you cannot select system, then leave it. It probably means it's already wiped and the system partition is empty.

I am extremely grateful for all of your valuable assistance, wise GameTheory! I followed your wipe procedure, then every step in your Post #127. This time, I did NOT reboot after each step as I had done in the past, which I hoped would be the key.

I did not get any indication of any error / error message. All messages reported success. I only rebooted as you indicated in your Step 6 - "Reboot and enjoy!" Note that I did NOT press Power & Vol Up to boot into TWRP, but just pressed the Reboot button.

Sadly, all I see is the same infinite loop "frowny" with moving circle (I've attached an animated gif of what I'm still seeing).

I'm so very sorry to keep pestering you, gracious GameTheory, but I still need more of your valuable time...

I hope this is my last stupid question...

I used Titanium Backup to restore too much of my previous phone's backup, so I had to wipe and start over. Everything's fine (including the installs from Post # 2) up to Step 16: "Make sure the top has the text “Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008".

All it shows instead is "No Port Available". This happened the first time, too, and it turned out my firewall was primarily to blame, along with having the USB settings to anything other than MTP. But I've corrected those, yet I'm still seeing "No Port Available".

When I installed QDLoader HS-USB Driver_64bit_Setup, am I supposed to choose WWAN or Ethernet? I've tried it both ways. but I still have no port availble and it never shows "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008". Would one of you ever so generous people help me with this please?

Thanks!

ETA: I see the following in the QFIL window:

Programmer Path:\Root﴾Z981﴿\ROOT\ROOT\BCM6153_V1660_PreBoot_20_KN.bin
Meta Build Content XML Path: P:\Root﴾Z981﴿\ROOT\ROOT\rawprogram0.xml
Fail to load contents.xml: There is an error in XML document ﴾2, 2﴿.

Thanks to all for your kind assistance! But now I'm back at the same point as my previous post!

What "Port" is QFIL referring to? How do I determine which port number to use? I've got USB and ADB debugging on, as well as ADB over network (i've tried it on and off). I've tried entering the 4 digits returned from the "ADB devices" command, but that doesn't work. I've tried the TCP port number of the IP adress from ADB over network, and that doesn't work either.

I would appreciate it if someone would help me with QFIL. Thanks!

You have to wipe these..... in essence it is a factory reset...... in twrp. It's not an actually factory reset. Can you still get into recovery?

I installed twrp and loaded into it by holding the power button and volume up. I factory reset the phone as instructed but now I'm unable to get into the phone. I'm just stuck on the ZTE loading screen. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
sorry i could not multi quote on my phone.

like i said, you have wipe, wipe, and more wipe before flashing anything. also make sure you make a nandroid backup within twrp as well.

here is a guide if you need one on twrp:

I'm not sure if you're responding to me but those are the ones I deleted and it deleted the OS I guess. I'm not quite sure what to do next since I don't have an OS to boot into.

How can I get more information on how to flash? I should have been better prepared.
as long as you have recovery you are gooooood. so do not freak out.

all you need to is flash a custom rom and you are set.

this is the forum you need to go to:
* WARNING, Link removed for public safety. The forum link was for the Original ZMAX !! **

This one should do better as it's totally ZMAX Pro's forum:
https://androidforums.com/devices/zte-zmax-pro.1779/

and i would recommend starting with this rom:
download link is in the second post:

** Link removed due to BEING WRONG DEVICE!!! ** (Look at the dates and details inside threads and forums.. Sorry)

i would go back into twrp and wipe like i said and then follow directions in the op for the rom.

if you have any questions feel to ask before doing so.

I made a backup but for some reason it's not there anymore
oooops sorry i guess i linked to the wrong forum....sorry guys.

yeah there is not much really for this phone. fortunately we have a rom here in this forum:
https://androidforums.com/threads/rom-unofficial-lineage-os-14-1-for-zte-zmax-pro.1285631/

are you sure you are looking in the right place? it should save it on your sd card?

if not you can just flash the rom above and you should have at least a working phone.

Root Cheat Sheet

1- Backup Phone.
DO NOT FACTORY RESET UNTIL STEP 6. IT IS NOT NEEDED BEFORE THEN.

2- OPTIONAL: Upgrade phone to last available Stock FW. (ZTE servers are back online)

3- Turn off Screen Locks. Turn on ADB & OEM Unlocking in Developers.

4- Get Root files.

5- Install TWRP.
(Always cancel when Prompted for a Password. Then Swipe To allow Modifications)

6- Factory RESET phone.

7- Reboot to TWRP (Hold Volume UP). Do a full TWRP backup.

8- Stay stock or go Discord.

9- Root with Magisk.

10- If you install Discord or any other ROM. U always install ROM, Gapps & always Magisk last. (DO NO UNZIP FILES. TWRP INSTALLS THEM FROM ZIP)

11- Terminal Mod must be done to fully root phone. (This is needed when ever u reRoot your phone)
- Reboot & Start setting you phone up by turning on Developer Mode & USB Debugging. And also opening he Magisk App so you can update it.
- Turn on Unknown Sources for apps. Now install a Terminal APK so you can unlock /System fully.
- Open the Terminal App and type "su" then enter & allow SU when Magisk askes if you wish to give it Root privileges.
- Once in # input the following command "reboot disemmcwp". Your phone will reboot. Now you should have full control of /System.

12- Congrats.

Guess I might continue to make my detailed instructions for now.
I have just followed this post and now got bricked on metropcs logo screen. what should I do now to get the phone fully working again?
