What Android version for Samsung S8?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone, on EE, in the UK.

My friend has the same phone and on same network and he commented about the new update having quite a few differences. As I had not noticed this we compared version numbers. He was on 9 and and mine was showing 7.0!!!!

So, I tried a manual update and it wouldn't do it, saying something about unsupported modifications.

I have just done a factory reset, then a restore from backup. It is still 7.0, but, the manual update now says it already has latest version.

Can anybody clarify what version it ought to be on, please, and why mine is not acknowledging that it is ready for a new version?

Thanks

The latest Android version for a UK S8 is 9.

The two commonest reasons for not getting updates are (1) someone has modified the phone software and it therefore won't accept official updates, and (2) the phone was originally sold through one carrier and is now being used on a different one, and will only receive the update notification when used with the original carrier.

So, questions:

1) is your phone a UK S8? Exactly what is the full model number? Did you buy it new? Did you import it from outside the UK?

2) If it is, was it bought through a service provider? If so is it still being used with the same provider?

The phone was acquired from EE when I took out a contract with them 18 months ago. It is still being used on their network.

I guess I must have done something, at some point to generate the "unuathorised modification" message, but, cannot recall what!

I have attached screenshots from Phone Info......hope they can shed some light on this!

Active CSC and current Firmware CSC shows a generic unbranded UK firmware. This should be the last official update and you should be able to install it with Odin
https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?record=E5D29D5E4D4111E99F15FA163EE8F90B

Instructions for flashing are at the bottom of the page. Firmware probably comes with two CSC files. If you use CSC Home, you will keep user data. Updating from 7 to 9, I would use the regular CSC file and start fresh, like new out of the box. Backup everything you don't want to lose first.

Been a while since I flashed a Samsung but think the whole process took less than 20 minutes. I wouldn't do anything to interrupt the process. If it fails, you should see a error message in Odin and maybe also on the phone.
Hmmm, gave it about an hour and a half - still no change - and gave up. Dropped the phone out of download mode and re-booted. It is exactly the same as before!!!!!

Going to try updating to version 8 as a stepping stone and see how that goes.

Strange. I'm going to go back through the screenshots you posted to see if anything odd stands out. Weird that you said phone was purchased from EE under contract but it doesn't have EE branded firmware or EE Active CSC code.
The "unauthorized modification" message is a little weird also.
Thanks.

I downloaded the Firmware earmarked for EE - wonder whether that was a mistake after what you say!

Just checked on original paperwork. The phone/package was bought through affordablemobile.com.uk and there is a line in it that says....

"Your Samsung Galaxy S8 Grey is supplied by AffordableMobiles.co.uk and not by EE."

I wonder if that affects things.

I've never heard of affordablemobiles, but it might be that they are selling unbranded phones on an EE contract. That's what Carphonewarehouse do, for example: no matter which network you get your contract with they sell an unbranded phone.

What does this mean in terms of getting updated firmware installed....am I knackered?

Anyway, the XEU firmware that you downloaded and tried should have worked since XEU is in the list of available CSC codes.
You can try again with Odin and post computer screenshots of Odin when it hangs up.
The one I tried was EVR not XEU! Shall I try XEU, then?

Thanks for your help and perseverance - much appreciated!
