My friend's phone isn't charging. I can get it to boot (maybe) but it says the power is too low to come on (0%). It was plugged in for quite a while. Now I've managed to get the case off it but I still don't know how to open the phone itself.

That phone has a non-removable battery so it's not meant to be opened by the user. You might find a procedure for replacing the battery which will involve removing the back but it's best not to attempt it unless you have the right tools and know what you're doing.

What do we do then? I'm pretty sure Cricket wouldn't have any real service personnel. They're usually understaffed anyway. Isn't there some way to rescue this phone? It's less than a year old and the battery charges great (or did).

Hallelujah, there was actually a simple answer to this. My friend took the phone and cord in and it turned out there was something wrong with the cord. Wasn't it supposed to be brand new? Anyway, they've been having trouble with some of the inner prongs (?) falling out, which I'd never heard of, but he was doubly lucky because he was missing only 1 of maybe 5 instead of 2 or 3, and he got a free, though I think used, replacement. The phone's working fine now.
