Rescue maybe worth it

I'm considering buying a 256 gb Sandisk sd card from Amazon. They're promoting something called Rescue, a 3 year data recovery plan for flash memory devices. I assume that includes sd cards. The price is $5.99. Should I go for it? It says that if the device fails they'll recover the data and send them on "a new piece of external storage media". If it doesn't work there's that money back guarantee.

So your data is only worth $5.99? Then go for it, or do what anybody else who's concerned and back it up OFF your phone.

Let's look at this from a purely marketing perspective. Why would SanDisk offer ANY data "rescue" service? Because there is perception of their devices failing. SD cards in general are fragile temporary storage mediums, so pushing them daily in a cell phone is going to increase the likelihood of failure. Why so cheap? Because it's easy for them to recover the data and throw it on a new card, if they can, or, if they can't $5.99 isn't much to refund.

I just got the card but I'm not sure if it's right. It looks too big. I guess the only way to tell would be to open the package but that might screw up returning it if need be.

That's a full-sized SD, and not a micro-SD. That will NOT fit in your phone. Don't open it, as that might make it difficult to return.

Full-sized SD are usually used in digital cameras and digital camcorders.

i use google drive, but there are many services that you cxan download on your phone. things like dropbox or microsoft's onedrive.

I've got all 3, but for the most part I use Google Drive to keep backup information for all my devices.

I just got the card but I'm not sure if it's right. It looks too big.

Like everyone else has said, it's the wrong card for the S5. Take it back and tell the store that you need a Micro SD card.

Ok, I guess I'll return it via ups. This is the first time I've done this. I hope it goes well. Should my replacement MICRO sd card be extreme or ultra? Does it make any difference?

That's what I was thinking. I've ordered the ultra instead of extreme. Has anybody on here used ups? Amazon claims it won't cost anything to send it back, but I don't know if that includes a box. They sent me some kind of qr code for the label. How do I use that?
print it and bring it to the ups store. they have boxes they use to ship it.

I return stuff to Amazon all the time. Even if I'm the one who makes the mistake, they pay shipping (but that might be because I'm a prime member). Like @psionandy said, they'll give you a link to a shipping label. Just print it out and take it to the UPS store. I use Staples because they are only a few blocks away. They'll scan the label, stick the SD card in a padded envelope and send it back for you. Very easy. You'll even get tracking information so you can confirm Amazon got it back in case they are a little slow to credit you.

I'm surprised by the issues you're having! In 20+ years of ordering from Amazon, I think I've only been required to actually return things two or three times. They generally just send me a replacement, or credit (my choice), and tell me to do whatever I want with the unwanted item (donate it, give it away). These were undamaged, perfectly good items, but too big or I didn't like the color, etc.

The few times I actually had to return items, it was easy-peasy! I didn't even have to leave my house--UPS came and picked it up.

It's not supposed to be this hard.
