"Lies" - The Knickerbockers
This was the best "Imitation Beatles" song ever. Done so well that many people thought it was by The Beatles.
Give it a listen
The voices are similar, guitar tones are similar, the writing style is similar (the "B" or bridge or release section is like those short, concise Beatles bridges that I admire so much), and the voices are even similar.
For the non-musician the B part lyrics are:
"Someday I'm gonna be happy
But I don't know when just now
Lies, lies
A-breakin' my heart"
For the non-musician, the B part changes the key of the song for a short while, releasing the subconscious tension of the original key, which is why the old 'big band' folks called it "The Release".
To a musician's ear the instruments are "tighter", the early Beatles tended to be a bit sloppy (not a criticism, just an observation), and the drummer has a more American Rock style. Minor differences that almost nobody but musicians with trained ears will notice. But when you have to learn pop songs 'by ear', you can't help but notice.
Anyway these New Jersey boys did the best Faux Beatles song ever.
That's probably TMI, but not only do I love playing music, I love analyzing and talking about it.
