Help Nextbook Tablet constantly freezes and crashes

Can someone please help me. I'm ready to throw my tablet against the wall. All I m wanna do is play games but the only apps that will run smoothly are Spotify and Droidware. I know my sec patch needs to be updated but can't figure out how. When I click on it takes me to Android open source project sec bulletins page with no instructions on how to update. I'm no programmer so this site is over my head. I'm I'm running. Android 7.1.1 but my endless research says my sec patch shud b newer than purchase date in 2017. So how's it been updated to 7.1.1. When I do for software update response is fw utd. I've done a factory reset... No help. Have sd card sharing internal memory.... Plenty of room. Droidware confirmed I'm running 7.1.1 so went to apkmirror and downloaded 7.1.2 hoping to fix and it says I'm already running 7.1.2 when I installed. Can anybody help me out please???

Sorry bout the sloppy post earlier. I was a little flustered at the time n didn't look over what I typed b4 posting. "When I do for software update response is fw utd" was supposed to mean when I go into settings and tap on "about tablet" then tap on "system updates" then tap on "CHECK SOFTWARE UPDATE NOW" a grey box pops up and says " No update required-FW is utd!". It takes about 15-20 seconds before this grey box pops up. I'm probably gonna sound a little ignorant here but IDK who it goes to or who it is responding. Also why is it saying "FW is utd" when it's supposed to be checking software update? Isn't " FW" firmware which is different from software? I do realize it's a low end device but I did put a sd card in it which shares internal storage as well as external. After I did factory data reset I've only installed 2 apps and updated all apps thru play store to current version. I still have a lot of memory and I'm trying to debug before doing anything else. FYI the only app that runs smoothly is Spotify????

firmware is a software update. after you flash a firmware update, your software version will change. if it says that you are up to date, then there is nothing you cam do. you can check the manufacturer's website and see if there is a firmware file you can use to manually update the device.

Thx so back to my original post, do u know how to update security patch level? I know mine is out of date for two reasons. 1). My Alcatel Android Phone runs os 7.0 and the sec patch level is 12-18 I have zero probs out of it n had it as long as my tablet. 2) When I click on "security patch level" in settings under about tablet it takes me to Android open source project security patch level update bulletins. IDK what to do cause there no instructions n I'm not a developer. I haven't always had these problems until. Play Serv update in Jan. Yeah my tablet was slow but the SD card fixed that. Then it went haywire after play Serv update in Jan. I've looked everywhere online for help emailing play Serv, comments on play store but nothing from them. K get this.. Installed droidware which confirmed I'm running 7.1.1 on invalid sec patch level... How??? Then went to apkmirror and downloaded 7.1.2 (at this point I'll try anything..I feel like I've wasted a month trying to get my tablet back). When I installed it, it said I'm already running 7.1.2!! Huh???? I have some knowledge of how msystems work and this all makesn sense. Does any of it to you? If I could go back to 7.0 I feel like it would fix the prob but I can't find info on how to downgrade. Maybe I'm digging to deep. IDK I just wanna play games n can't afford a new device.

Before you drive yourself nuts, just stop worrying about those security patches. The security patches are NOT something you, the consumer, can control. Don't bother going into your Settings menu and trying to force your tablet into getting security updates and don't waste any more of your time trying to manually apply them from some third-party source. Security patches your device receives have to come from your carrier or the device manufacturer so the fact that your tablet isn't getting any more of them just means your device isn't getting supported any longer. Take a breather and stop fixating on the matter, it's not something you can do anything to readily solve. Here's a very good analysis and summary on how messed up the situation is:
https://www.xda-developers.com/how-android-security-patch-updates-work/
And just for some peace of mind, these are worthy of reading through too:
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3268904/android-security-facts.html
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3411440/android-security-scares.html
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/android-security-a-peek-behind-the-scenes/

Also, getting back to your original query about tablet freezing up a lot, keep in mind security patches aren't going to fix stability and usability problems. They address security issues, not usage problems. Those are more about operating system updates and operating system version upgrades. But those are also a matter of your carrier or the manufacturer providing them to you, and if you're not receiving any that's also a sign your tablet just isn't being supported any longer. Keep in mind that 'System update' menu in your Settings is more of joke by Android developers that has little practical reason for being there.
What kind of games are you attempting to play? Your model has relatively low-specs:
https://www.consumerreports.org/products/tablet/nextbook-ares-10a-32gb-388192/specs/#specs
so if you're trying to play games that require a lot of RAM or a relatively higher resolution display, they're not going to work out very well. It might be time to think about getting a new table that's more capable.

Thank you for the info because I am driving myself nuts trying to figure this out due to the fact my tablet was fine just a little slow. After the play serv update 1-30 all this started and I can't figure out why. I can no longer work and am on a fixed income so for now a new device is not an option for me unfortunately. I have purchased an SD card which I set up to run as internal as well as external so I seem to have plenty of memory. If you would be so kind as to keep helping me troubleshoot I think it can be salvaged. The games I have played successfully are Mystery Society 1, consecutively with Blackstone but Mystery Society 2 wouldn't load all the time or it would freeze my tablet (I play in landscape mode) then the screen would flip to portrait and become Frozen and I'd have to do a hard reset. It got a bit annoying so I uninstalled. The other two games continued to work fine. Then I got interested in match 3 games. Now I'd like to play merge games like merge gems and merge dragons but they wont even load. When Im no longer playing a game (for good) I uninstall to accommodate for the low memory. So I have now done a factory reset and am starting over. I've updated all play store apps to current and only installed droidware and Spotify which both run smoothly. But as soon as I download a game ie: merge gems... they aren't responding. System ui not responding, launcher not responding, it seems to just be endless with the apps not responding. Most of the time I click on wait and it will catch up but sometimes the app not responding will stop... Over and over. I'm sorry this is so much info and problems but it seems something has caused my device to go haywire since the play service update 1-30 and I've spent ALL my time trying to fix it. One last thing.... I ordered a Google dev config report and low and behold I have android.dev_admin.software that I didn't install or authorize. Could this be the culprit? And how does android just give out admin software MOSTLY how do I get it off? It is loading at boot. Plz help and once again I'm sorry or so much info.

Well if your current budget doesn't allow you to buy a newer, more capable tablet and your current tablet just isn't capable enough to use some of the apps you want to use, you just have to accept the fact that your tablet just can't do what you want it to. Time to just lower your expectations, or you're just going to get more frustrated. Also, it's not just a matter of adding more storage space by getting a bigger microSD card in the hope that will increase your tablet's overall ability. Storage space is just one factor but some of the more advanced gaming apps also require a relatively good CPU and GPU (especially the graphics processor), and a good amount of RAM. The screen resolution is also a factor as some games do require a higher res than what some some devices are capable of. Those are fixed items in your tablet so it's important to always pay attention to the specs the game developer states are the minimum and correlate that with the specs of your tablet.
Plus, keep in mind when you set up microSD card as 'internal' (a.k.a. adoptable), that slows down the overall speed of your internal storage abilities. The internal storage chip inside your tablet has really fast read/write capabilities with low latency, while any microSD card will be significantly slower with higher latency (in part attributed to internal storage is soldered directly into the logic board, connecting it directly to the internal wiring of the logic board while any microSD card is connected via the card bus, the added-in wiring that's only supplemental to the logic board). It's not something that affects common usage tasks, like social media apps, email, texting, etc. but advanced games are more demanding so any deficiencies become more evident.

OhsuzyQ I think we've given you all the information you need, about the tablet, and using Android forums...
I honestly don't know what else you could do besides upgrading to a better tablet at this point

I really appreciate all the time y'all have spent with me. I'm just not understanding why my tablet was fine until play Serv update 1-30-20. It started acting up then. I've tried the wipe cache, data, uninstall to fact version. Turned off auto update in play Serv and under dev options on my device but still updates to most recent version. I've looked everywhere to find out which play Serv version works with my tablet thru droidware app and apkmirror but my tablet won't let me install . The most important thing I haven't said yet is I ordered a dev config from Google and found that android.dev_admin.software has been installed on my tablet without my approval. I'm a 52 year old woman and this IS MY device. Digging deeper I found the Android Policy app hidden so I uninstalled it but didn't matter cause the dev admin software is still there. IDK how to remove it. There seems to be an underlying problem and I'm knocking on the door so to speak but can't get in. I've found alot of these querky things I haven't even posted cause idk 'how to use the forum' properly I've never used a forum b4. For some reason I have a notification from AF saying can't verify my device. I've responded 5 times thru the link so I thought I'm using the forum wrong. I don't wanna waste anyone's time by giving info thats irrelevant. Sorry

If you read through your thread, you'll find plenty of responses.
The problem is still a matter where you want to use a low-spec tablet to do things a higher end tablet can do. This model doesn't have enough RAM, only 1GB and a marginally useful display, 10" screen with only 1024x800 resolution. The RAM limitation is a major stumbling block -- you can do various, basic tasks, more or less individually, but anything more involved will have serious affects on responsiveness and stability. But these are hardware deficiencies that cannot be minimized by software solutions.

Ok but why is it that I just did a factory reset and updated apps thru play store to current version nice only downloaded a cpl apps. No games and I'm getting the app not responding or app has stopped. And what about the android.dev_admin.software that's been installed on my device without my approval. Or knowledge till I ordered the device config off my Google acct and saw where it's loading on boot??? How can I get this off?

Can u suggest what type of tablet wud be good to use for playing games as well as having a good internet connection that wud run jumping off a hot spot (that isn't too pricey)???
i have the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 and i have 0 issues with it. i use it mostly to play games (most of the time it is only Hearthstone) and to cast netflix, prime video and youtube. it is only 16g storage and 2 gigs of ram so i only have a few games installed at a time. but it is samsung's lower end device so i'm not expecting much from it.

Thanks for the info. I'm still stumped with this Nextbook Ares 10 A. Since I did the factory reset I haven't installed any games. Only Pitch Black Wallpaper app and Nova Launcher cuz it's awesome. It's not crashing or freezing but I'm still getting 'app not responding' & 'app closing'. Just happened n Gmail. I know for a fact android.dev_admin.software has been installed and loads every time I boot it (verified thru my Google account device configuration report). I think I found someone to help me get it off. I'm pretty sure play serv (thru the same persons acct that put the dev admin on my tablet) is controlling my tablet and phone. IDK how to stop it. I don't do anything wrong, it's just the point my device is now wack!!! Things started disappearing off my device was what started my looking into what was going on. When I found hidden AOSP and Android Dev Policy App on both my ph and tablet I started reading up and understand what's up but it's over my head how to fix. I thought if I removed them it wud stop but it hasn't. Just got worse. So I guess I messed it up. Gonna take the advice I've gotten here n take it to a tech or get an upgraded device. It'll cost more to repair than what it's worth. On the other hand if im able to get an upgraded device unless I know how they r sneaking n my back door it's just gonna happen again. In the meantime I appreciate all the help!!

Instead of adding apps like Pitch Black Wallpaper and Nova Launcher, you might want to take a more reserved approach. Adding more eye candy and a different launcher, even though it does have its advantages, are also things that will be always running in the background using system resources that have an adverse effect for a low-spec tablet.
It would be to your advantage if you only install apps that you need, not what you want. Unless you're disabling the already installed services when you're installing extraneous apps, adding in a third-party wallpaper and launcher will be running concurrently with existing processes, using up memory that your tablet just doesn't have to spare to begin with.

Buy a new tablet with better capabilities, (as much as you can afford). Right now you're trying to use a marginally useful tablet beyond what it can handle.

I don't think u quite get my problem. I can't see how u can possibly think a pitch black wall paper that's 92kb in size and has used all of 12 kb of data to keep my eyes from hurting is eye candy. As for Nova Launcher it's 27mb app that uses very little data and yes I disabled Launcher 3 which constantly stopped responding Nova has not once not responded or frozen Nova has 50m+ downloads with a rating of 4.6 on the play store The info in the activities helped me find the hidden apps on my device. KUDOS to CAMERON SUMMERSON, Editor in Chief of How To Geeks. He handles all of the UX writing for Nova. He rewrote all the text from the ground up for the 6.0 launch. Svim, you have single handedly made up my mind to uninstall and leave this forum. Next time maybe you should pay more attention to the help a new member is looking for!!!!!!!!!!!
