WhatsApp messages restoration

Dear Members,
I updated my WhatsApp messenger 2 days back and with that my messages got deleted somehow.
I uninstalled & reinstalled in a bid to restore messages. However, the process seems endless and seems to get stuck at "41%" due to some reason. I have tried restoring, as per the app's prompts, from Google Drive & a local backup upon last one's failure but to no avail.
Can somebody please guide me as to what would be a prudent next step ?
PS: I have contacted whatsapp help and they just reply with a standard protocol-like email.
