I have a note 9 and am wanting to root it to try and recover deleted pics from a text message on the on the phone. I know in the past some US models from the US providers could not be rooted, does any one know if my model can be?

actually there is!!!!!!!!!
for future reference anything related to root i always do my research over at xda. but IMHO i find that xda developers forum is a drama dam waiting to burst...so i do my research over there, and come here to AF for questions and such.

Apparently it can be rooted according to XDA Devs, but it will do a data erase, which means nothing will be recoverable.

not if you follow the guide. it does look a bit complicated. it does also have some draw backs:
1. first off the biometrics do not work.
2. the modified firmware that is used to flash with odin is oreo.
3. there does not seem to be many custom roms available yet.
4. looks like it can only charge to 80% from what i understand.
so yeah it is not all sunshine rooting the note 9......but that is up to the op.
main thing is to read, read, read and then read some more. i am currently readibg the whole thread......at least as much as i can tonight.

I'd just like to add that if your n960u has a Android 9 or 10 firmware it may not be possible to downgrade back to Oreo 8.0 or 8.1. If the aboot partition is a higher version (number) it will not be possible to downgrade to a lower aboot partition.

i have been reading the thread, and there is no mention of that fact. i think the combo firmware tricks odin or something like that. after flashing the firmware, it leaves you with oreo. i could be wrong on it, but is what i understand from reading the thread.

You make an excellent point Mr. @ocnbrze . I've been reading around that some people were able to bypass the downgrade bootloader lock error in odin by first going into their desired downgraded firmware tar files and deleting any file that ends in .bin , and then successfully been able to flash the older firmware but some result in "param.bin" fail in Odin. However, being an engineered combination firmware and no mentions of Odin fails is something I hadn't concerned.

Widely there is some specimens are known to accomplish what supposedly cannot be accomplish like downgrade into a lower version from a locked boot loader but then they don't share how they did it..

If the model number is N960F you can root. If the model number is N960O you can root. If the Note 9 has an Exynos processor you can root. Otherwise, please don't try it. Samsung w/Knox security makes great unrootable phones, but if you want to root, get a Pixel or a OnePlus.

I think the Note 9 has to be on Android 8 or 8.1/Oreo to root

Too many ifs and missing items to even try root IMHO at this moment.
Maybe in the future when they can get those missing things working with a nice Android 10 ROM?

The only way that you will ever root a Note with the Snapdragon processor, is if Samsung gets rid of Knox Security. End of story.

What you're quoting is not real root. It's a bastardized version of root, that is done on a much older version of the operating system, and only used for "test" purposes. Please stop holding out hope to people who really want root on the Note 9. I'm talking about the real world, not the "i hope it can" world. Knox took away the bootloader unlock in the U.S., which was exactly what Samsung wanted. Pixel or OnePlus are your best rooting options, for the U.S. market.

I know what the link I quoted states and have a rooted phone with TWRP, SuperSu, Xposed and full r/w system access. I am aware that it requires a lower OS and since the new Note 9's on a higher firmware with a higher fused version (aboot partition) you will not be able to downgrade and thus unable to flash the combination root firmware. However, it is considered root nonetheless. Personally, without a custom recovery, roms and kernals to flash or systems to port what good is it? I guess its the best you can hope for with a locked Snapdragon N9.
PS: I've almost given up hope on a U.S. flagship with an unlocked bootloader. Freaking sucks

OK, I'm pretty much rooted out. I went to a Note 9, because I like the specs on the phone. I had a Note 4, and really liked the experience. I still have a Nexus 6, running OS 10, just in case I want to root again. Right now, there is nothing out there by Google that comes close to the Note 9, and that includes the Note 10.

hey!!!! i love my note 10+ . it beats anything that i have ever owned in the past. probably keep this for a while which i never do....there is nothing out there by Google that comes close to the Note 9, and that includes the Note 10.
but i agree that it is just not worth rooting the snapdragon note 9....even if it is possible. if you want to root a device stay away from samsung snapdragon devices. get a google pixel phone instead.
