nope looks like you will need a computer. with each android os release, rooting gets harder and harder. back in the early days of android (android os 4.0-5.0) you could have used an exploit that kingo root used....and all you needed was an app. nowadays, things are quite different and much more complicated.

so....sorry your phone is on oreo (8.0) and there is not much you can do, other than find a computer to use.

what about those updates? just remember that with each update, they also will update security. updating security will thus make it harder to root.

If you haven't received any OTA version upgrade by now than the odds are there is no such thing as an 8.0-to-9.0 upgrade for your E5 Play. It's up to Motorola if it cares to release an upgrade or not. Google may be releasing version upgrades annually and security patches monthly, but that doesn't necessarily mean those upgrade/updates will get to our phones. It's a very conditional issue.

You can check here, enter the required info and see what the upgrade/update status is for your model but don't get your hopes up too much. The E line is the 'economy' line so long-term support is a very low priority.

Kingo root in the past has been a security risk, so I can't recommend anyone use it.

Rooting utilities like Kingo Root and King Root are unfortunately very popular, their advantage being the easiest way to root a lot of phone models. But that group of 'one-click' rooting apps are typically sourced out of China and often involve implementing system-level data-mining, linked to miscellaneous online servers, along with doing things like resetting your browser's home page or its default search engine.
So you while you will end up with a rooted device, in an oddly inverse way you need to apply those root privileges to also 'clean' up your system up so it's not being compromised using such a dodgy process to root your device.

Indeed, these apps are sketchy and now totally worthless as of Android 7.0+.. Really 6.0 but there were a rare few with severely outdated security measures/patches that them apps hadghad through but now are utterly worthless with these newer OS versions. One sorry about that, but YES. You NEED a PC to:

access bootloader mode, in which to
use fastboot commands on PC and get device unlock code that Motorola website requires for bootloader unlock application.
More fastboot commands on PC to unlock said bootloader, once is retrieved from email

Hold on, you're not done with the PC yet.. Lol.
Now that you have unlocked said bootloader, ya need to use more fastboot commands on PC to:

install the TWRP recovery..

NOW you can boot the device into recovery and install Magisk Root and/or ROM.
