Root Root Meep X2 using Kingo Root

I got my son the Meep X2 tablet for christmas. Stock, it is great for younger children. However my son quickly outgrew the basic UI, and I felt the need to upgrade to a basic Android launcher, which would in turn help familiarize him with the ins and outs of using smart devices. However, the Meep is pretty dumbed down in terms of the Android experience. Out of the box, it doesn't allow access to the play store (not directly anyway.), and it doesn't allow for developer options to be enabled. Obviously this means no USB debugging. Rooting the device is pretty easy, however there are a few hurdles to overcome.

This guide assumes you have already accessed the Play store, and installed an alternative launcher. Whatever your preference is, as long as we're no longer dealing with the Meep UI.

Also, the risk is relatively low, but as always, I take no responsibility for soft / hard bricks, or any damage that may occur to your device. By following this guide, you assume all risk and responsibility.

Thing's you'll need:

Kingo Root - Free download

1.) Access developer settings
First and foremost, we need to enable developer settings. If this was any other device, this would be a trivial step. But in the case of the Meep X2, we need to do a little work.

Search the Play store for a shortcut to Developer options. I just picked the first one I found (There are a few of them, they all work the same way more or less.)

That's the one I used. Like I said, they all accomplish the same goal.

Open the shortcut. Scroll down and enable USB Debugging

2.) Open Kingo Root on your PC
Don't connect the tablet just yet.

As in the image above, it should say please enable USB Debugging mode. If you're still playing along at home, you should have done this already. Go ahead and connect the tablet. When I connected my tablet for the first time, it didn't ask for drivers or anything. It just connected as a camera. At this point, your tablet's screen will show this:

Now this is where it got strange for me. The first time I went through this process Kingo Root reported Root Status: Yes. I knew for a fact that the device was in fact, not rooted, as reported by Titanium backup, and a handful of other apps that require root. This may or may not be the case for you.

3.) Gain root access
At this point, you're either going to see the screen above, or a similar screen that only has one option at the bottom, "Root", along with the device ID and root status. Go ahead and click "Root", or "Root Again", depending on the choices it gives you.

Continued in next post.

A new screen will pop up, and scroll several lines of text. It only takes a minute or two. You will eventually be greeted by this screen:

Congrats! Your Meep X2 is rooted!

4.) Install a superuser app
Kingo Root does not do this for you. Simply search the play store for "Superuser", and install the program of your choice.
At this point, more advanced users may choose to sideload the superuser apk with ADB.

I haven't tried any kind of recovery, and roms are all but guaranteed to be nonexistent.

Hazard15301 - thank you for the info on rooting the Meep x2. I just bought my son a Meep x2 and I am interested in rooting the device so that I can access to move apps to the microSD card. I am new to rooting, but I think I can do it (with following your directions!). I do have one question though, once rooted, what happens to the Meep apps that were originally loaded on the tablet - are those apps still available to use? Or will they be deleted if the tablet is rooted? Thanks in advance for any info!

Nothing is deleted or uninstalled. You can choose to use the default launcher on the Meep, which will still give you access to all the original apps and games. You can also choose to install another launcher such as GoLauncher to make accessing the apps easier.

Hi, thanks a lot for the info, worked perfectly! I rooted meep x2 only to change it's language, while localisation app did it's job great, I found that original meep x2 settings menu is still in original language. It's amazing that it was quite easy to bring back this useless (meep servers doesn't work) tablet back to second life, now I only need to find a way to translate that menu

This is an English-language forum, so questions really should be posted in English only.

However, a web translate tool (I'm afraid my Italian is very limited) says that you asked:
how can I install developer options without the playstore considering that now I can't access it anymore?
Developer options isn't something you install. It's on your phone already, just hidden. Find the "build number" in the software information in your phone's settings and tap repeatedly on it until it tells you that it has revealed the developer options menu (which sometimes takes the form of telling you you are now a developer).

Having developer options active does not stop you accessing the Play Store: all of my devices have developer options available. Being rooted also does not stop you accessing the Play Store.
