Random Shutdown when plugging in charge cable

About 18 months ago, this issue started, but only in my vehicle, nowhere else:
  • Plug charging cable into phone, phone would die.
  • Could not restart phone unless I unplug cable and wait about 10 seconds
  • Once restarted, I could plug in cable and all was normal
This did not happen every time...and there was no pattern I could find.
I tried two other cables over the next three months, same thing randomly happened. ALL cables were fast-charge capable and shipped directly from Samsung.

Since it only happened in my 2012 Kia Sedona, and nowhere else, I attributed it to the vehicle.

Fast forward to November, 2019, and traded off the Sedona for a 2019 Ford F-150. And it continues to happen...but only in my truck. Nowhere else. Again, I have replaced the cable twice over the past year, again with new cables directly from Samsung.

I keep charging cables in my truck, at my office desk, at my desk at home, by the bed, and in the living room, and keep my phone charging when I'm not using it.

Why is this happening only in my vehicle and nowhere else????

Thanks!!

You mention that you have tried varios cables, and now even vehicles.

Have you tried a different charger?

Also, even if it is more inconvenient, have you tried plugging the phone in, and then plugging the charger into the vehicle?

Try this- the next time you are going to unplug the device, unplug the charger from the vehicle.

Then unplug the phone frome the cord.

When plugging back in, plug the cord into the phone, then plug the charger into the vehicle.

The idea is to have 0 current in the cord when plugging into the phone.

Yes, you are supposed to be able to plug right in to a live cord- but as I am sure you are are aware of 'should be' and 'reality' can be quite different.

I have a device that acts similarly at times, and the method above prevents the aggrevation you describe.
I actually have to remove and reinstall the battery from the device to get it to trn back on, so it is very frustrating.

Thanks for the tips:

I have plugged/unplugged in every order imaginable. It takes a long time to see if it makes a difference, as this is a random thing. So, I'd change the order and keep that order going for a few weeks until it happened again, switch the order, keep it up until it happens, rinse, repeat.

In the Kia, I did try different chargers. Three, as a matter of fact. In the Ford, there is no charger to swap out, as this pickup has a USB charger built in to the console. Therefore, it's a cable running directly from the phone to the vehicle with no charger in between the two.

The Note 8 is an old phone. No warranty, battery not holding a charge nearly as long as it used to, so last night I bit the bullet and traded it in on a new Note 20 Ultra. Hopefully it'll be a long while before I have this issue again, if ever. :D :cashdroid:

Now that you have a new phone, try to wipe the old Note 8 and just put the basic programs on it again along with any new Security Updates (I just got one yesterday and yes, I'm still rocking my Note 8). See if any of the "phone charging logic" changes.
