Moving/force-installing apps onto the SD card?

Actually this makes me rather pleased with myself! I've had this G1 since Feb 2017 and it was a refurb then. Mid-2018 it slowed down and everyone I knew told me that's all the lifespan I should expect, but instead that's when I had a nose around the internet, found this forum and revived the phone. Spent time on it, but learning is never wasted and is almost always a pleasure, and I enjoy spending time far more than I enjoy spending money. I inherited the G2 in Feb 2018 and kept it as a spare (and have taken it out of the drawer now only because the G1 became unreliable with alarms/notifications - not much point when a 6am alarm tries to wake me at 2pm) - I'm very glad to have a "freebie" spare. The old files I took off the SD card dated back to at least 2016 so if it lasts the rest of this year, I'll take the cost of a new phone on the chin as I've done pretty well on the cheap so far. :)

And I'm careful to stay backed up in case one or other keels over without warning.

Heavens, that's a scary thought.

I can't get rid of:
- an antivirus;
- a file explorer app (FX is only 10 MB)
- Greenify because without it my battery life was literally half as good (only 4.4 MB);
- AirDroid because I use it all the time;
- AccuBattery because it is lengthening my battery's lifespan, and it's less than 6 MB;
- WhatsApp because the website can't be used without the phone app connected;
- Messenger Lite (only 18 MB) because the browser won't view FB messages but redirects to the Play store for the app (luckily I don't use FB very often so I might uninstall this after all);
- Business Calendar 2 because I live entirely through it(!) on an hourly basis;
- SleepyTime which with a sleep disorder is essential (4 MB);
- Naked Browser, which is unaesthetic and clunky but does allow tabbed browsing and is less than 2 MB!!
- iPrint&Scan which at 75 MB is huge by my standards, but without getting a different printer I have no option;
- Podcast Addict - well, in theory I could *but*... 24 MB not counting the downloaded podcasts;
- Notepad (2 MB);
- some banking apps and a fuel discount app, because you can't do online banking / get the money off without having the apps (and they're far from space efficient, grrr).

I could in theory get rid of:
- Equate calculator but it's only 1.3 MB;
- YNAB - but the whole point is that you log spending as it happens;
- App Manager, 7 MB, but so much more useful than android Settings;
- FairEmail, 13 MB and beautifully customisable;
- Textra, though i'd hate to be without it, it's so much the best thing for SMS;
- a weather app, but I'll be without forecasts (I can never catch them on the radio);
- a gallery app, though Android's own is next to useless;
- Puzzles, but it's my only "game" type app and it's only 6 MB.

I'm already living without:
- my favourite keyboard (I hate the native one);
- any password manager; backup; junk cleaner;
- internet speed check (Ookla won't work in the browser);
- anything to record voice notes/dictation; anything for audio editing;
- an archiver;
- any time/project management; habit tracker; multi timer (linked series of countdown timers, which I used to call can't-live-without); alarm clock that's customisable;
- anything that does anything with PDFs, any video editor;
- not only Wikipedia but all reference apps, dictionaries, subject-specific etc;
- BBC iPlayer; BBC Sounds (and I just realised I've probably lost my downloads when I uninstalled this);
- Facebook (though I had FB Lite anyway, which iirc is about 1/3 the size of the standard app);
- any "socialising" apps except WhatsApp - inculding messaging, forums, Skype, Zoom - I'm even without Tapatalk, though my social life is almost all through it;
- banking/shopping apps (except the banks I mentioned that force it on you);
- Google Home - but if I'm ever to use my chromecast I'll have to install it;
- Mondly, which I was hanging onto in the hope I'll get back to learning Greek sooner or later;
- any apps I had for for fun and/or interest. eg games!!

I clear the cache at least daily, and seek n destroy sent images etc (the ones where they copy themselves) as needed.
I've stopped keeping any photos on the phone and send them all to my laptop as soon as I've taken them.
I don't store music on the phone - was planning to start doing so, but never mind.
I've reduced podcast settings to keep maximum two episodes of each podcast (so now I keep missing episodes! - my listening's always sporadic).
I miss Wikipedia as the app rather than the website, because I'm used to leaving lots of articles open in tabs.
I miss doing text adventures in bed (not the same sitting at the laptop), and if I ever have leisure time again, I'd love to get back into graphics-rich RPGs!

I don't feel I'm wasteful in what I like to keep on the phone. (Wikipedia was the one thing I fantasised about carrying around in my pocket, before I had a smartphone!)
My phone is currently telling me "You're running low on storage" and that I have 691 MB available. - actually that does look as if it's limiting me to a GB. :oops:
All of the "can't get rid of" apps come to about 410MB. All of the "could get rid of" add up to another 108 MB. More if I download lots of podcast episodes, but they'd go on the SD card anyway.

Sorry if I'm a bit defensive on

I hate paper, and you made go get some, and a blasted pencil, too.

I don't want to get into all of what you listed, but I will touch on most and give alternatives.

These are what I use, on my 8 and 16GB devices.

Antiviruses are junk.
They really are, and only slow your device down.
Most of them are actually security dangers themselves.

For a file manager, use Simple File Manager

Greenify is great, I love it.

As for AccuBattery, be sure it is actually doing anything good. I have never seen a 'battery' app that is not worthless- or worse.

WhatsApp is insecure. There is no debate about this.

As for Facebook and Messenger, use Frost. It is a great combination of the two, and you can even customize the theme.

I did not like Naked Browser. Clunky is being too nice. Try Lightning instead. It is much faster and more capable.

For a notepad, try Notepad from Panagola. It is less than 1MB. If you want more, try Simple Notes from Simple Mobile Tools.

Weather apps are insecure, intrusive, and horrible... just horrible. Et on your browser, and bookmark https://emergencyemail.org It is great.

Simple Gallery Pro is an excellent gallery with editing capability.

I use two keyboards, both are small. Simple Keyboard is my favorite, but sometimes I like to use Hacker's Keyboard. Between the two you should be covered.

Bitwarden is an amazing password manager. It also syncs between all your devices.

A junk cleaner is not needed. Now, to be honest, on a new device they won't do a thing good for the device.
That being said, if the OS is Lollipop or older one can be beneficial.

For Lollipop (5), there are two that work wonders, Fast Task Killer and Fast Optimizer, both by the same developer.
For Marshmallow (6) or newer, I would use Systweak (Android System Cleaner).
If you have Marshmallow (6), Nougat (7), or Oreo (8) then I recommend an older version that has no ads. The newer versions for 9, 10, and up have ads.

Now give me a minute, (or more) and I will make another post that gives all the links to the above apps.

I will answer any questions about these apps, as I use them myself- many for years.

If you really want to use an antivirus, try Sophos.

For Facebook/Messenger, try Frost.

Lightning is a sweet browser. Let me know if you want a great set up for it.

Lightning (Lightweight web browser) - https://f-droid.org/app/acr.browser.lightning

Use Bitwarden for a password manager.

Bitwarden (A secure and free password manager for all of your devices.) - https://f-droid.org/app/com.x8bit.bitwarden

Systweak makes a great cleaner app.

Use version 5.0.3.9 for Oreo (8) and older, and the newest version for 9+

https://systweak-android-cleaner.en.uptodown.com/android

For the other apps, Simple Mobile Tools is a great collection of small, simple, effiecient apps.
They are excellent upgrades from the stock apps.

Look up the site online.

Thank you @puppykickr for all this! (And even braving the pencil and paper for me!)

I'm by no means wedded to having an antivirus if I don't need one. It just seems so odd to be online without - is it that the function is built in, now? I have Marshmallow - Lollipop on the phone I'm moving from.

I am going to go down your list one by one. But not tonight and probably not tomorrow - letting you know as it would be rude to drop out for a couple of days without a word, after you put this time in.

Yeah, these Android things don't need any antivirus.

The reason being that the only way for malware (viruses for Android don't exist, by definition) to get in is for you to download it and then install it yourself.

Or, someone else takes personal possesion of your device and has the time to install it.

The other way is for software that you download to have permission to download files without your permission.
This is goes right along with what I said first- you have to download and install it.

Malware is like a vampire- you have to invite it into your phone.

There are all kinds of articles and app developers that prey on the fear of 'unsecure' devices.

But the general consenses from Android developers and what I have read on XDA, here, and other noteworthy sources is basically what I have already said.

I only mentioned Sophos because when I used it I liked it, and it was one of the few to score a perfect score when tested against other antivirus apps.

But, this was before I knew that antivirus is unnecessary on Android.

After I uninstalled it, I did see an improvement in device performance.

I use low end devices, so if an app is a memory hog, or runs all the time, I can actually tell pretty quickly most of the time.

Is your Lollipop phone completely caput?

I ask because having another device has been a great convenience for me.

Not only do I get to expand my storage, but the other devices are very useable on Wi-Fi at home.

I even recently rehabbed my Lollipop and now it is my device in the bathroom.

I stream radio with it.

This keeps me from needing to bring my main device into another room to listen to news or music.

By using a Wi-Fi sharing app, I can wirelessly and quickly transfer files to and from my devices in other rooms.

F-Droid, by the way, is new to me. Thanks for putting me onto it.

I didn't know antiviruses don't exist on Android. I'll relax, then!

WhatsApp - unfortunately I have no choice. I was forced onto it, to stay in touch with a group I belong to. Later - before I realised it's owned by Facecloth (ew) - I forced all my friends onto it (well, politely suggested ;)) because I'd started receiving SMS with huge delays - and texting was the main way I stayed in touch. (Delays anything between 30 mins and 4 days, yes DAYS, make "conversation" impossible - and "I'll be there to collect you in ten minutes" isn't much use when it arrives the next morning. The techy people are doing their best! but have been investigating for weeks now. The problem has followed me to the new phone and a new sim.) So basically, WhatsApp is all I have for "texting" and keeping up with friends.

AccuBattery - I wouldn't go near most battery apps, but I do like AccuBattery. It isn't a task killer and doesn't speed up charging. And has no animations! It takes up 6 MB.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digibites.accubattery
It alerts me when the phone's charged to 80% (or whatever %age I set), helping battery lifespan - it gives some idea of which apps are draining battery (not always but sometimes helpful) - it shows how much of the time the phone's in deep sleep while the screen's off - and it shows charging speed both as it happens and historically, which has helped me identify which cables are beginning to die without waiting to see if the phone stays uncharged. It does some other things too but these are what I find useful.

If junk cleaners are redundant, why would I get any of them? :p
Anyway, I was only thinking cache and junk files, not task killing (I have Greenify for that).
... I did try Systweak ... It found 3.7 MB cache, while the phone settings showed 59 MB. A notification popped up that it had freed memory when I hadn't yet told it to do anything. It's also ad-ridden, some of the ads noisy. Sorry, I don't like Systweak.

I looked at emergencyemail.org, but I'm in the UK! I don't find a weather app intrusive (too large) but not intrusive); I like having the temperature always visible to glance at. I have Today Weather:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.lockdown.weather&hl=en
and I like the choice of data source (usually half a dozen, not just Accuweather). And rain warnings. I could go to Accuweather or equivalent in the browser - but no, it's the notifications. (This is another drawback of using the browser instead of apps for FB etc: no notifications.)

Bitwarden - I'll happily take your recommendation and set Bitwarden up. I researched password managers a few times but never reached a conclusion, so I've been living with intelligent but samey passwords stored in my head. I never felt sure of security, nor that organisations wouldn't go out of business and leave me with hundreds of passwords to reset... mind you, that was ages ago, I haven't thought about it for quite a while, and when something's survived longer and has more of a following, it's easier to trust.

Facebook and Messenger - I'm not (very) bothered about themes, but I like the look of Frost - its multitasking, for example. I love that it's open source. I'll give it a go. :)

I never said I *liked* Naked Browser :D but it's less than 2 MB! But I've installed Lightning now, to trial; first impression's good. :) I have space to play with it, for now, as I haven't yet reformatted the SD card and brought those apps back.

I've come across Simple Mobile Tools, tried a fair few of their apps - can't remember why I preferred other options. In some cases I didn't - I still have Simple Gallery. Had to bring the APK from the old phone, as it apparently wasn't compatible with the new one - but it works fine on it. I'll check if I've already installed Simple Thank You, and if not I shall.

I'm very happy with Notepad by Dmitry Korotkov, 2 MB on my phone, and it exported/imported my notes without hiccups. I remember trying the Panagola one, but this is even more minimalist.

I have a feeling I used Simple File Manager for a while, but I do like FX.

I tried Simple Voice Recorder yesterday. On the old phone I have Easy Voice Recorder from Digipom https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coffeebeanventures.easyvoicerecorder
Simple is certainly much smaller, but Easy allows sharing recordings from the app; otherwise they're much of a muchness.

Tried Simple Calculator, but it seems to do no more than the native calculator? The calculating part is the bonus for me - I found Equate when I was looking for a currency converter. It converts all sorts of other things too. You can even convert lengths to average llama height, too. ;)

I tried Hacker's Keyboard a while back; it allows a lot of customising, I remember. You've prompted me to give it another go :) but I may not put all that time in again. I'm stuck with Gboard for now. I really miss SwiftKey, but can't make it work on the G2.

... OK, I take it back. It installed successfully just now! It wouldn't before, I tried a few times. How strange.

Not at all, it's mostly fine, but alarms and notifications arrive a random amount of minutes or hours late which forced me to retire it. I'm happy-ish to use it as second fiddle, but it is more to carry etc etc and more to replace when one or other finally dies. Alarms and the calendar mean I'd have to take the old phone when I go out anywhere, not just have round the house. But never mind, I accept I'm not going to have everything on one phone. I do like the thought of all that "free" storage.

If you’ve been using the SD card as portable storage and you moved some apps to the SD card, you need to move these apps back to the internal storage before adopting your SD card as internal storage. If you don’t, these apps will be erased and will have to be installed again
Oh, I know! :) This is why I haven't got round to putting it back as it was, yet. All that double checking of exported data, all that faffing around, all over again so soon.

If you can look at your other options, relating to a previous post you made, there are really well specced budget devices available, new or slightly used, that will have tons more storage, along with better ram and later OS.
I see you are on GiffGaff, which I had been using for my spare number on a 2G only little Samsung dumb phone / candybar phone, until I put the G4 back in use with a £10 prepay Smarty sim with 30Gb.I didn't like the way GG raised their base £5 plan to £6 where you could only top up a minimum £10.00.

You may know GiffGaff do phones separately on a pay monthly, c £6 - 7 would get something decent. (they are low or out of stock on many currently) You also have CEX online (webuy.com) while their stores are shut. I bought a lot from them over the years.

You are welcome to my G4 free if you have difficulty stretching out any budget atm, trust me I know what it's like. it has 16gb again, with 2 gb ram but is on an April 2018 security patch and Android 7.0.
I think £100 - £160 (or less) would get you a pretty decent device otherwise. I've been meaning to look online again at the various specs and prices. I think an E6 or Moto G7 or G8 base model. I understand you don't want anything too big.

Tech Spurt on You Tube do good comparison videos on recent Motorolas (mind his language), but Nokia and other good brands do good stuff.

I was just thinking that if I habitually use two instead of one, then that's twice as many to replace over the years. Long term budget forecasting!

Here https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-sim-only-contracts/ it says Smarty is now £7/month. I haven't clicked through all the links on that page but MSE is generally up to the minute on these things. On the same page, I see Lebara (Vodafone) and iD Mobile (Three) at £3.99/month, but I'd have to find out if I have Vodafone coverage at home; pretty sure I get no Three signal here. Definitely not with EE. It's the other reason (apart from cost) that i'm with GiffGaff, O2 was my only coverage when I made the choice. (I agree with you on GiffGaff raising their monthly goodybag by 20% like that but it's still best in my situation unless Lebara would work, but for £12/year difference, I may not bother checking!)

Those £3.99 options are for <3 GB, but I think I could manage on that, I rarely use that much. Though I'm using a bit more as my wifi continues to deteriorate, so I now keep data on all day to prevent the many wifi dropouts from causing downloads, backups, everyday life etc etc, to break throughout the day. (Good ol' rural life, eh. They've restarted promising us fibre one day... not putting a date on it yet, though...)

Yes, and that would double my monthly mobile phone costs :)

I've never thoroughly looked into paying monthly for phones. I got my G1 for £60 in Feb 2017, discontinued, refurb, and as I've said I paid nothing for the G2. I'm hoping to spend zero for at least a couple more years.

Seriously??! I won't say no - I have no pride. That would solve these time-consuming difficulties and leave me the G1 and G2 as spares/backup, and see me through for probably a few years yet! ... Perhaps ignore the other parts of this reply, then. :D

One day maybe. So far spent £60 total on phones and £60/year on contracts!

Thanks, I'll have a look, always good to gather places for research when I come to do it.

I just need to sort another phone before I can pass ir on. I realised I cannot now use the Smarty sim in my candy bar phone again, as like my Three sim they only work on 3G+ devices.

You are most welcome to it when I resolve to buy a newer used device as a second phone very soon, as I need that number on.

I also replied in detail to your PM / Conversation message.

Old thread I know.

But I've always been mad at the people who make these phones and devices. Like seriously. 16gbs? 32gbs? That's not enough! My galaxy s7 has 32 internal and I mean it is decent, closest I've came to full was 6Gb.
(yes I love my s7.... I don't care if it's old lol)
But wtf man I don't understand whythey can't make these devices stock with at LEAST 64gb internal. For real some people have a lot of apps. I don't think I'd come too close to filling a 64gb internal... I don't have a bunch of junk. And whatever I do have I move it to the SD card if possible. And I regularly clear the cache in every app and data in some. Most people don't know that little trick lol. I've seen my chrome app accumulate 12gb cache before! Seriously! I hit the clear cache and it went down to like 500kb or something. I was amazed.
And I only have what I consider essential to me. Like chrome. Firefox. Pandora. Reddit, utorrent, PayPal, Newegg, eBay, Amazon, mega.nz, YouTube, fb, Tumblr, Instagram,
Like that's really it. I'm forgetting some... But idk man....
When your internal storage gets cluttered up to the point where you can't install anything else...... That's not good. And it also slows down your phone....

It's like my pc. I have a few hard drives. Won't get into all of'em, but one is specifically for the operating system. NOTHING ELSE! Then the other hard drives I have are for installing programs and games and what not. My rule of thumb that I've learned back in the day from the ogs that taught me when I was learning about computers was whatever drive your operating system is one, keep it as free as possible.

Idk I just wanted to ramble. Lol good day people!

I still love my Rooted Galaxy Note 4 :) Its my daily drive and for being a 6 year old phone youd be surprised how quickly it responds. Forcing apps to sd is not as bad as they say. I many do this with apps I seldom use. Sure it takes a slight bit longer to load but it frees uo internal data which make for a much snapper phone all around.
Now formating the sd card as internal storage is not what I have done and I don't recommend that for obvious reasons.

Heres an example of "force" move to external sd

Marvel Comics app

No native move to external sd in phone settings

Yeah, but does it work

I wouldn't be posting if it didn't :) Now, being that my son inatalled this app 7 months ago and maybe opened it up 4 or 5 times will that degrade my sd card ?

Glad you're sticking around the Forums @Hunter19877 :)

Old thread but I'm still interested if people have solutions/suggestions to offer!

So how do you do it?

Maybe it's obvious from your screenshots. It isn't obvious to me. :)

... Oh, hang on. Rooted. I gather without rooting this still isn't possible(?)!
For myself, I've decided to explore rooting when I have the leisure and potentially money to spend on playing around with this stuff. Until then, I'm not experimenting just in case. Which is likely to be be years in the future.

The screen shots only display that the app was moved from internal to external. The ability to force apps to sd does require a rooted device. Once rooted, an app can be used to force move apps to sd. In my case I use Lucky Patcher.

I also have a custom rom that alows me to move some apps to sd within the app settings page. I consider this moving apps to sd.

As there is no native method from the app setting page, I consider this forcing apps to sd.

Gaining root access on Android is akin to running Windows as an administrator. You have full access to the system directory and can make changes to the way the OS operates. As part of rooting, you install a management client like Magisk — SuperSU used to be the top option but has fallen into disrepair. These tools are basically the gatekeeper of root access on your phone.

Gotcha. I thought so. I've made a decision not to root for now - lack of leisure time for exploring for fun, unless there's pressing need...

... but thanks for the titbits of info about rooting. I know I'll be going there sooner or later :)
