VZWsupport Twitter now says leakers WILL receive OTA..

So has anyone that returned there phone with the v3 leak been charged the full price for the phone? The only reason I want to get off the leaked version is if my phone breaks under warranty I would like to eventually get it fixed. The reason I went to the leak was I figured I would get the official version sometime and it wouldn't matter. However now it looks like we are stuck. My guess as to whats going to happen is in a month or so the OS will be available for download. The devs will fix it to install over the leak and bam we are good. But until then I'm worried something stupid will happen to the phone and I won't be able to get it fixed. I know I took that risk running the leaked OS however I didn't think it would have taken this long for the official release of 2.x for the eris. Anyways main point to my ranting is will Verizon eventually notice you're leaked and charge you when you warranty exchange the phone?

Do you really think that will happen, or do you think the leak will be to much of a pain in the butt for the devs when there is already a known way to root and modify 2.1 OTA without any headache? I don't claim to know how the devs operate as I'm just a noob, so it's a legitimate question I think?

I'm just curious, as I figure by the time this is all said and done, the leakers will be in the minority.

They are either completely clueless, or they just don't care.
They don't care. Or at least they shouldn't. They send them back to HTC for a reflash, IMO, and get a full reload of 1.5. OTA comes immediately afterward.

But here is my issue with Verizon on this. No matter we or they say "you took your chances.." these leaks were not hacked or rooted ROMs. These were released by HTC and Verizon so that we could beta test the software. It's one of the reasons the finished product was as stable as it is.
However, I've been a beta tester before more times than I can count. After the beta test is over the testers either,
1. Get the gold version for free. or
2. Get thanked and can reformat their machines, buy the release, and install it fresh.
That's what happens most of the time. I knew that a beta had debugging in it and some bloat but I would then reformat and reinstall the full version. Verizon ****ed us on this no matter what anyone says. They should have made 2.1 official a download for us leakers or at least given us a link to reflash to 1.5 then gone 2.1 OTA. Instead, they stress us out a bit not knowing if we will ever get another update. Some have returned their phones due to minor problems and some have said that is unethical. I'm not going to pass judgment on either. But suffice it to say, if you do return it for a refurb Verizon will not be out one red cent. If you want to hold the moral high ground for some reason, don't begrudge those that return their phones for an official version. It's your decision alone. By trashing others you lose that moral high ground you so feel is yours.

I tweeted the very reliable @vzwsupport about future updates for the current bugs many of us have encountered. They said "it is being looked at. Have you done a hard reset?" I told them I hope this wasn't a permanent solution with the hard reset and this needs to be fixed after what happened over the weekend. They asked for my account info and would get a tech to call me. I only have 1 phone and told them I would just go to a store and have them look at it.

I'm hoping that will happen since I can't root or get the official version.

Believe me... me too. I have v2. I'm just hearing a lot about the "technical impossibility" of this even with the download. I downloaded the official download (not the v3, but the actual OTA), and the Bios says installation aborted and restarts over and over again. I'm concerned about the very real possibility that this may never be a possibility for those of us that jumped the gun.

maybe we should get people to bet against them getting it to work then they will feel the need to prove people wrong and fix it......

Technically it will be very hard to do, so I'm pretty sure it won't happen but I'm still in the hope boat.

Everything can be over written it's just a way of doing it.

At work we have come up with a program named BART and we Ghost images to PC's. It completely over writes everything on the PC. If we have a virus we can not contain and it destroys the computer and it wont run we ghost an image over it and voila problem solved fresh XP all over again. These things are just mini computers anything is possible.

Especially if Verizon is taking leaked phones and turning them into refurbished phones they obviously have a simple way of over writing the phone. They need to assist us and release a program to help us get off the leak. We are all technically savvy since we have the leaks in the first place.

It would be nice to see HTC or Verizon actually cater to us and assist us with getting on to official software.

1. Having official software instead of a leak is putting my mind at peace. I'd like to be able to accept 2.1.5 that fixes all these known bugs. HTC wont let their product not function correctly.

2. Who said the downloadable update will be any different, we are still stuck with this new bootloader and we cant go backwards. Unless the online update has the bootloader we are using then we SOL. But why would it when their leaving the OTA receivers on the old bootloader.

That's a risk you took when you installed the leak. As far as number two, we'll have to wait and see whether VZW releases an official version that can be installed on a phone running a leaked OS. It's a wait and see game, no amount of asking VZW is ever going to change that.

Can someone explain to me the lesson of the leak? This was the first time I have ever done something daring with my phone, and what do you know? It blew up in my face... My bad... :D Well, that being said, I'm guessing that all future rooting, future updates from Verizon, and basically the future of the phone is a no-go? I am on V2, but I am guessing I should go V3 because it is the last update this phone will ever see?

You're guessing it's a no go based on nothing. The fact that the OTA contains a different bootloader has no bearing on future updates to the phone. I don't know why people are overreacting. At this point, nothing has blown up in your face. You are capable of running the exact same OS as people who already have the OTA. Simply install leak v3 and you'll know in the future if you're able to get future updates. If you can't, at that point you'll know that it blew up in your face. Chances are, the bootloader will change with future updates.

Until then, you're in the same boat as everybody else, running 2.1.

Just going off others assertions within the forum (really all I have to go off of), but good to know there is still optimism. My understanding was that the boot-loader would prevent future updates as it did the current.

As a matter of fact, that was mentioned in this thread, but if this is truly hearsay, then I will remain optimistic as I imagine there will be minor releases to fix the issues people are reporting on the 2.1 OTA.

I agree with you to a point. The OS on a phone is more like firmware in the sense that a bad firmware install can brick the device and with a PC OS it will never ruin your computer. If you are making the computer comparision I would compare it to the BIOS or firmware OS on your router/switch instead of XP. There is probably an application to flash the PROMs and other chips back to factory. This will allow HTC, VZW, or whoever to get an OS back on a phone. Also the chips could be so inexpensive that replacing the chips isn't a big deal for them. So when they do a get a rooted, leaked, or bricked phone they just swap some hardware on the board and it's a brand new phone again.

I'm not an expert so if any of that was wrong feel free to point it out. I'm happy people can still exchange the phones under warrenty when stuff breaks. Still a bummer I can't root my phone though

This is true... It would be more like flashing the bios on your PC which CAN brick a PC, and PERMANENTLY as well.

Ah ok, I didnt think of it that way. But the replacing a chip because it has a different firmware on it would definitely NOT be a cost effective way of doing things.

Putting any version on these phones is possible just with the correct signature from HTC and Verizon. They know we are stuck with this leak. We did not root our devices we simply installed testing platforms from them. It would be very nice of them to make us our own LeakTOota file with the correct signatures to get us back on the same level as the people who did not leak.

I also question the official testers with-in the company... did they have to get new devices to get on to the official OTA?

In "the lab," I am sure they can electronically wipe and re-image the bios. They are not offering us the same courtesy, I'm sure, because we technically did something they did not authorize us to do and are therefore not responsible for our actions.

No, they were told that the last beta release they installed and the OTA are the same software, just delivered differently.

Really? So they are in the same boat rite now. If/When HTC releases a 2.1.x they will need to be able to push it to their own staff using leakv3. I just want to make sure I get all the bug fixes I can for this over priced paper weight. Texting and browsing the web is a breeze but try and use it for it's proper function (a phone) and i get lag lag lag freeze battery pull.

VZW makes their employees use their phones so that they're familiar with them. One rep told me they get a new phone every 30 days.

They likely gave the update to a wide cross-section of their users. You don't have to be a "techy" or "geek" to do this. Just report what you run into. They do NOT have to try and figure it out.
