Well there are different firmware versions for each region. You can ask your provider what version of Android they ship with, or bite the bullet and update it yourself. You don't necessarily need to update to the firmware for your region. You will however need to know your providers APN (Access Point Names) details. Ask your provider, they'll gladly tell you.

Alternatively when you get the phone, back them up before you upgrade.

i would be getting the phone off ebay so i would have no idea what country's carrier it is originally meant to be on... if i got a different countrie's firmware and tried to flash it and it was the wrong firmware for my device, would it brick my phone? and ya i can get the apn settings for tmobile, i had to do it for my iphone.

Anyhows, I take it I'll need the phone's sim lock removing (by taking it to some generic phone store) in order to use odin to flash if the service centre won't do it?

My SP lock was on when I first flashed mine!

Ok, I've updated to JD4 and rooted. Now, how do I get rid of the apps that I don't want!

There's the easy way (read costs money) and the hard way, (cheap)

Easy Way.
Install Root Manager.
It allows you to easily:

-Reboot normal, recovery, bootloader (widget)
-Remount /system
-Wipe your data
-Remove system apps (with backup)
-Remove apps data
-Manage data connection
-Manage sd card mount
-2.1 ready

Root Manager

Hard way.
Install the SDK learn a little Linux, and delete them.

One thing that I have noticed that does not seem work is voice mail. I'm not sure if it has to do with the upgrades or not though.

When I was on JB2 and T Mobile sent me the text to set it up, when I rebooted I got an error msg pop up saying something like "Sorry, but such and such failed to load".

When I upgraed to JD4 and set up voice mail again, there was no error msg but it still won't work.

Maybe I'm missing something. Any ideas?

BTW - Root Manager does not seem to be on the market any more :-(

Head over to Login and register for the site and forum becuase a note is on the i5700 firmware page that states "- If you come from America don't flash! (Ask for a firmware in the forums)". Maybe threads in the forum with advice.

Just a feedback about the official update into 2.1: it was really realesed in Poland...

In a first moment, I tried to update and there was an error. Then, I took out USB cable, SIM and SD cards and put in "firmware / download mode" (volume down + camera + power buttons), connected the cable again and made an "Emergency Recovery". After this recovery, Android 2.1 was installed automatically.

I used NPS 1.5 at Windows 7 (country set as Poland and language as Brazilian Portuguese), with debugging option turned off in the phone. The version installed was the I570EXXJC1.

Everything is working great! One bad things is that I lost every installed app from 1.5 (didn't make backup). Contacts were kept, but messages no. Live wallpaper and 3D photo gallery are not available too.

The keyboard is working much better and the touch sensibility is more accurate too... :-D

Too bad that version 2.2, if comes, will take still a looong time, I guess... :-/

Interesting that users updating to 2.1 from official sources are getting Experimental Firmware version I570EXXJC1, yet there has been 6 further experimental releases.

the site states "Note: All our firmwares are official Samsung Firmwares."

The codes to work out the follwing firmware version I570EXXJD4 is:

I570 E XX J D 4

I570 = I5700 phone

E = Eclair (googles name for 2.1)

XX = region code for - Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom

J = 2010

D = April

4 = version

So who knows if they are all experimental (some are obviously not) or just official leaked internal builds. The Network provider or distributor must have the option from Samsung to take the phone with any 'current' build, test and then release. So in UK 3's case they took I570EXXJC1 (as this was probably the current version when Samsung shipped the phones to them) - 3 tested it and OK'd it - and sold the phone with that version. 3 will probably stick with I570EXXJC1 unless they have good reason (lots of bugs and complaints).

The Samsung eclair builds got many versions initially in March (as you would expect) and have slowed off (again as you would expect).

2.2 Firmware anyone?

Actually, out of interest, I've been battling whether to upgrade to 2.1 now I got my phone unlocked incase I break it (Just moved house and don't have money to replace...although it is insured). Whats the reliability of, say, I570EXXJD4 in regards to not crashing? I have to restart mine on 1.5 from time to time (turn off, battery out) as it seems to have some minor glitches, it time not updating, refusing to open market etc, but I don't want to have to do this frequently. Saying this, even the official releases seem to be previous versions of the experimental versions (?).

Is there a way of backing up current firmware before overwriting it?

What are the differences between the firmwares? These new releases are only for enhanced performance, better response, faster navigation, etc. or are there improvements in the visuals and new options?

I'm with this old one (I570EXXJC1) and don't know, in fact, if I would be able to flash to another version (as my mobile is sim-locked)... I'm happy with this version indeed (much better than 1.5 anyway), but I have this curiosity...

Other features (Live wallpapers, 3D gallery, etc.) are possible only after rooting, right? If it's really necessary, I'll pass...

IMHO and not wanting to argue, I am just trying to confirm for everyone (only someone from Samsung truly could) the interpretation of the firmware build numbers. Every Eclair (2.1) build has I570E at the start, and no other prior build (and their are many) based on 1.5 have E after I570(0). 3 in the UK and many other European mobile providers have shipped I5700's with I570EXXJC1 - bit odd to ship 'experimental' builds on shipping phones (we all expect bugs in software but not to openly supply 'experimental' software). Also software companies of all kinds generally use the 'beta' tag to show software is not UAT'd and not the 'shipping' or 'production' version.
