Messenger is now called Work Chat?

Mmm. Haven't noticed this one. I'll have a look. When I saw your post, thought it was just an update calling it work chat, thought I wouldn't be surprised.

Facebook Messenger? Is this impossible?

Messenger is messenger, period.
Anything else is adware.
Work chat? What if you aren't working?
What type of notification are you getting?

LOL, friendly chat? Church chat, community chat, family chat.. Definitely an adware.

Which "Messenger" app in particular are you referring to? I've never heard of this "Work Chat".
There's many apps called "Messenger" on Aptoide. And the forum you posted in, is for this in the Play Store.

But the dev's website for this "Messenger" app shows a "Too many redirects" error. Of course I'm NOT going to try it.

That would explain (A) the word 'work' in the title, and (B) the higher version number.

I too distrust Screwgle and so use alternative appstores, one of which is UpToDown.
When Android System Webview gets updated, UpToDown usually gets a beta version before the release of the standard app.

This has caused me aggrevation in the past, as sometimes there are bugs and the app is usually larger as well.

Unfortunately, the Android System Webview Beta will seamlessly update the standard app, but not visa-versa (probably due to the higher version number of the beta version), so then I must uninstall all updates to go back to the original.

This is one reason I also use ApkPure as another appstore, so that I can discern if apps actually have been updated or if it is just another beta release.

Perhaps turning off update notifications would be beneficial for you, as it was for me.

Check for updates once a week or so.

I totally missed the big problems Google had with apps crashing due to a crummy Android System Webview update a few months ago, simply because I resisted my OCD and did not update any apps for a month or two.

I run multiple devices, so updating becomes a real chore and a PITA.

A more recent translation could be
"If your software works and you like it, don't update it."

Sure, some updates are necessary-
but in the end, all apps will be updated to the point that you no longer like them or they won't work on your device.

Update what really needs it, and relax for the rest.
