How to get updates

Hi all,

I've been reading that Samsung is moving the S8 to quarterly updates and then will stop all updates in one year.

Given the security implications of not having the latest security updates, I would like to find a way to keep my phone update to date with the latest patches.
What is the best way to do this?

Would I need to root my phone and install some other Android OS to accomplish this?

Thanks all!

I thought that S8 updates had finished already. It's not listed amongst their currently supported devices.

My first thought is that you don't need to be as paranoid about security updates as some would have you be. Their ending does not mean that the phone instantly becomes a liability. However, if you want to continue getting updates your options are limited. If your phone can be rooted in the first place (some Samsungs are easier than others, even different variants of the same model) and if you can find a ROM developer who is still active on that device and still updating their ROM with the latest security patches then that is an option. But there are several ifs there, and it's quite likely that it won't be possible. ROMs have to be built for the specific model, so you really do need a ROM that is not only being supported for the S8 but for the type of S8 you have (e.g. Exynos or Snapdragon based?). I suggest having a look over at the xda-developers forum to see whether there is any activity in their S8 development forums.

To be honest though, your best bet for ongoing support would probably be to buy a newer phone.
