Apple versus HP versus ?

I guess TG must be Thanksgiving. In that case, black Friday must really be Buy Nothing Day. It was instituted maybe 20 years ago to remind even the biggest corporations that without consumers they would be nothing. I intend to observe it scrupulously, as always, and I invite everybody else to join me.

I dudn"t mean to be high horsy about it. I just think that the big sellers should remember that it's the (often little) buyers who keep them in business. The consumer at least should be in control. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'm assuming that cyber Monday is the one right after that weekend. Would then maybe be the best time to snag some computer deals? I'm just guessing on account of the name.

Good luck with your crusade. Historically I hunker down with no plans to leave the house from Thursday through Sunday for anything of a commercial nature (though sometimes with family I might go to a movie or out to eat) except since getting married my wife likes to get our Christmas tree that weekend. Since so many are out shopping that’s usually a good time to go as well.

I’m still very surprised at the number of people who will camp out (literally!) for days in a queue to be one of the first to get in to Best Buy/Walmart/Macy’s etc. for the deals. That the greed now extends into Thanksgiving Day itself just makes me sadder. :(

I was just looking at a pre-holiday flyer from Costco and found this HP. If I were in the market for a basic Windows notebook it would already be purchased. ;)
Since you’re talking about an external drive anyway you don’t have to worry about the smaller SSD, and while all the big names throw some “crapware” on their boxes, HP is not that bad with it. While it comes with Win 11 in S mode (limits the software that can be loaded) you can turn that off (which most folks will do).
Very respectable specs for under $380, it’s available in Costco stores and through their website ($10 shipping) at this price until 11/14.
It’s Model 14-dq2053cl, here’s the link to the product page at HP: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c07905318

I'm thinking of maybe this but I don't know how to "put it in the cart". Of course I would want to know the exact pricing, especially since it's available with a number of options. The most important to me would be a bigger hard drive, but if it costs too much I would probably just have to add on, maybe later. I sure hope that's plug and play. Apparently HP ain't that bad after all.

You will pay much more if you order through HP.

If you’re not a Costco member then ignore it all. Otherwise buy at (or order through) Costco and you get 8GB ram and 256GB of SSD. That’s a decent amount, and since you’d indicated you would use an external HD then you shouldn’t need more than 256.

Intel vs AMD; is that argument still going on? I’ve had both and have had better luck with Intel. The AMD fans always say “you can overclock the AMD” but that only matters if you’re a gamer or video editor.

I’d guess that at least half the people out there, for the way most PCs are used, wouldn’t recognize ANY difference from a Celeron to i5 to AMD. But for many it’s like bragging rights. Me? I’m more concerned with stability and reliability.

If I wanted a new laptop, I'd have one of those, Win11 would stay on it just long enough for me to install Xubuntu or Mint XFCE.
Are you building drivers over there? I loaded Mint on an old Toshiba i3 and there were a few I had to go find. I wouldn’t want to think about that with new hardware and on a laptop, to boot. ;)

It's beyond me. I just don't like or trust untel. They've been caught doing too many bad things and as far as I know never having to pay for it. Linus Torvalds sure took them to task, and Microsoft too. Buying a computer, phone, etc. shouldn't be a political thing but then neither should believing in science.
