Anyone very familiar with Whatsapp??

Hi all
I had a whatsapp account connected a phone number that has expired for quite some time but I forgot to update the phone number. A few hours ago I was forced out of the whatsapp suggesting that someone has logged in with it. Yes, in my country, expired phone number will be redistributed to new user.

I understand that I am in a worst situation that I'll probably not able to get back the whatsapp but I am fine.

My question is I am really NOT familiar with Whatsapp things.
I'd like to know what is the possible data or information he/she will be able to get when he logged in my whatsapp with his phone??

Will he be able to retrieve my chat history? Or will he be able to have a list of my whatsapp contact?

What is other possible information he'll be able to retrieve? I forget what setting I've made for whatsapp

I'm so worried.

Of course I did NOT log out the old account for months after expiry of the number and the number is then redistributed to another one. I just got to know it today when whatsapp kicked me out....

Of course he will have full access but could he retrieve my chat history and contact?

If they're logged into your WhatsApp acount, then they'll very likely have access to your WhatsApp contacts. Chat history probably not, because WhatsApp doesn't usually backup that itself when changing devices by default. I recently changed phones and I use WhatsApp, and my chat histories were transferred to the new phone via Samsung Smart Switch.

very encouraging, today I gave a try, and logged in again using a new phone number, all contacts and chat history are there!!! Nothing has lost!! I start to wonder if there isn't really an account existing for whatsapp like that of FB and IG, they are keeping everything in your local devices and phone number is just a way for another to find you

Ok, so they are there.
That does not mean that they are/were not available to the person that got your old number.

I would change the number Whatsapp has for you, contact my Whatsapp contacts to let them know that your account might have been compromised (and tell them how), change my password, and log out.

I have just looked up the terms by Whatsapp and they said they my chat history is always stored locally so doesn't matter how my account is accessed my chat history is saved and won't be retrieved to him, what else to worry then?

by the way there is NO way for me NOT to change my phone number because the old number isn't mine already for quite some months, as I said, I really forgot to update the number. What else can I do to him?

Just be sure to change your password and let your Whatsapp contacts all know what happened.

If this person starts messing with your contacts (posting things that you did not, and other harassments) then you may have to tell your contacts to delete your old account from their contacts list and then you would need to create a new one for them to add.
