Sorry to be a pest but I cannot find how to configure the default email app. I'm using Aquamail and that doesn't have that setting. In the settings, it has listing for other areas but not email. When I highlight an email address it never asked me. It just opens Gmail. I turned off open supported links in Gmail but the pop-up still has Gmail as default and Aquamail is a selection when tapping on the 3 dots. I'd prefer not to uninstall Gmail but I will if I have to.
Thanks in advance, Screenshot_20220105-125401.png

With Aquamail already enabled and set up, there's not any real practical reason to have more than one email app running concurrently. Use Disable on the Gmail app so its processes will stop running in the background.

Ok, I disabled Gmail and that got rid of that. But now PayPal is the default email. It cannot be disabled and turned off. I tried uninstalling it, restartinng my phone and installing it again. It's still the default email. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But the app is very easy to access than the browser which will take time to load the page!
Your missing the point. I'm trying to get the email app I use to be the default. On all my previous phones you assigned it in the settings. Thanks to svim & Hadron I disabled Gmail. (I didn't think I had that option) But then PayPal became the default email app. Why that is considered email, I don't know. I figured maybe I did that by accident. So I uninstalled PayPal, restarted my phone. Then Aquamail was the default. So I reinstalled PayPal and it became the default email again. So I gave up and uninstalled PayPal for now. But this doesn't make sense. PayPal isn't an email app. It makes no sense. Any help or explanations would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Nobody is missing the point.
If you disable G-Mail, then the problem will go away.

If it does not, then that means that the developer(s) of your choice of e-mail app have neglected to put in the code that makes the app show itself to be able to be a default e-mail app.

If your browser is slow to open G-Mail, then you need a better browser.

I can only assume that Paypal has declared itself capable of handling email intents, for whatever reason.

I don't recall any problem with Aquamail doing this when I last used it, but I've not used it for a few years now (since the original developer sold it to Mobi). Can you go into Settings > Apps, find Paypal and see whether there is an option there to clear it's status as default? Or search settings for "default apps" and see whether there is anything you can do there?

(I don't have Paypal installed either, so can't investigate that app's behaviour).

Thanks Hadron. I had tried what you suggested and the only thing that worked was uninstalling it. I still don't understand why PayPal is considered email. I'm going to try to contact PayPal & Aquamail to figure this out.

Based on your screenshots, it looks like you're referring to the shortcuts which appear when highlighting an email address rather than what happens when you tap on a 'mailto:' email link. A Default preference should kick in when you tap a link to perform an action, but that's not the same as the text selection shortcuts. Am I understanding that correctly?

If so, Paypal likely suggests itself to the system as capable of handling the "copy an email address and perform an action" task to make it easier to send money to someone via their Paypal email address. There is unfortunately no way to change how the system presents those shortcuts or what weight is given to each app, at least as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize that there was a difference.

As you've previously surmised, the PayPal app is not an email app, so it sounds like at some point you inadvertently assigned the PayPal app to be default for email related file. Go into your Settings >> Apps menu, find and open the PayPal app entry, and clear its default open menu option.
That's what I thought too, but no. I did what you suggested and it didn't work. So, to be sure to clear any added PayPal settings, I uninstalled PayPal. Then turned off my phone to clear any settings. When I turned the phone back on, Aquamail was the default. So I reinstalled PayPal and before I even opened it, it was the default email app again. So it definitely is within PayPal and not me.
Thanks anyway. I appreciate your trying.
