Screen Protector - RESOLVED

My wife just got a Moto E 2020 from Verizon Prepaid. This phone is to replace the phone she had that does not have VOLTE or HD Voice - which Verizon notified her is no longer going to be supported without. We just realized that the screen is just glass and not any of the gorilla glass type screens (which surprised me because my Moto G5 plus has that type of screen. There are so many screen protectors and reviews on all seemed to be mixed. Are there any that members of this forum have used that work well - fit correctly - and are easy to install (I hate installing screen protectors - especially when there is no installation frame to correctly line the screen protector up with the phone screen). I recommended this phone to my wife because my G5 plus has been great. I am hoping that I am not going to regret this. There were many great reviews of the E 2020 - and I went by those. Thanks all!

Yes, I have that same device, I have the unlocked version but the outer shell and screen are the same.

The tempered glass screen protector you are looking for can be had (as of last year) at Wal-Mart for about $15.

It is made just for the device, and fits perfectly.

The problem may be that the device is dated, and they may not be carrying these in the store at this point.

I also got the rubber surround that covers the back and sides. This was also about another $15 or so.

Keep in mind that both the screen protector and the surround add a very noticeable amount if weight to the device. The weight is doubled!

In addition to these items, I purchased a Nite Ize brand case from Wal-Mart, an XL sized one.
(I have also found these at Menards.)

These are about $15, and offer an awesome amount of protection and secure on-person storage.

If you cannot find the screen protector and/or the rubber surround, I would just go with the Nite Ize brand case.

Here is why:

1. Because the device came from Verizon, that version cost $50 when it was new.
(Not knocking it, I am using it as well, and paid $120 because mine is unlocked.)
You can easily spend more than the worth of the device on accessories.

2. The device is already two years old. The battery and the hardware will be aging quickly from this point on. Batteries age whether the device gets used or not- they last 2-4 years, and time is time. Perhaps the Verizon version has a user replaceable battery, but that would be ~$20 for an already aging device.

3. The Nite Ize cases are very nice, have a durable belt clip, and offer a great deal of protection. I have had multiple devices in the past with no other protection than a case like this, and have only suffered very little, almost unnoticeable damage even after years of abuse.

The glass screen on these devices is pretty darn tough.

Remember that short of a case like mentioned above, any added weight adds to the potential of more damage to the device in a fall.

I often warn against rubber and solid surrounds, as they weigh as much as the device itself, and prevent the device from popping apart on impact. Popping apart is built into the design, and greatly reduces damage from falls.

My work is on concrete 10 hours a day, and everyone at work has a screen protector and a rubber surround.
Know what else they all have?
A broken screen.
A guy just yesterday dropped his $1500 Samsung and the screen looks like it took a bullet.

Guess whose screen is not broke?
Yup. Mine.

I have dropped the thing, like everyone else, but the soft case is the savior.
The only reason I had to go with the largest Nite Ize case Wal-Mart offered was because of the added rubber surround.

Pictures 1 & 2 showing front and rear of device with screen protector and rubber surround, and 3 & 4 showing the case the device goes into.

The screen protector and rubber surround weigh more than the case, and basically doubles the weight of the device.

Altogether, this entire combo easily weighs as much as the Motorola 'brick' that I had +20 years ago with an extended battery- no exaggeration here at all, I am afraid.

So yes, there were device specific glass screen protectors and rubber surrounds for this device available in-store less than a year ago.

I have not seen them there in months, as the device is now dated.
The Nite Ize case offers even more protection, and it is universal- it will (probably) fit your next device as well.

If your Wal-Mart store does not have these items in stock, try them online.

Thanks for the reply! I have checked the several Walmarts near here and none have a screen protector for the E 2020. I have looked on the Walmart website and none that they show are coming from Walmart but instead from third party vendor and are pretty much what I have seen on Amazon and Ebay. I saw one on the Motorola website for the E 2020 that implies on the packaging is from them. That one is on Amazon also and the reviews are mixed - it is the one I am leaning to. Some say it leaves a gap around the edge - which I understand is intentional to be able to fit a cover over the edges to the screen. Some say it broke as they put it on. Some say good things. It is hard to go by any of the reviews on Amazon which is why I came to this forum to see what real owners have to say.

I plan to get a cover for it. I have seen a few that look good. The problem is this phone is for my wife - who is starting off not happy that she is giving up the phone she loves (not because it is a good phone but because she is used to and and most importantly fits nicely in her pocket. She does not carry a handbag. She is upset enough that the E 2020 is starting off almost an inch bigger than her phone - it just fits in her pocket as it is from the box. The weight is not a concern but more how much bigger the phone will get once we cover it. She does not wear any belts so a belt case is out of the question. I carry a belt case much like the one you have that has been great for me - but I can't convince her that this would be a good idea for her too - and I have tried. I has held up well with my G5+.

I am walking on eggs to get this new phone just right for her to ease this transition. It is the "smallest" of the phones we cam afford that are not considered terrible that I could find for her. All I have heard since she was contacted by Verizon that her phone would not work after the full transition to VOLTE is how miserable she is and will hate any new phone. She mostly uses the phone for calls and texts - plays a few basic games like solitaire on it, takes photos, and looks up a lot of things on the web with it. I suggested she could go back o a flip phone and that did not go over well. The E 2020 - other than size - is perfect for her - especially the 32 gb as her phone at 16 gb started not updating apps because it was running out of storage.

Anyway - thanks so much!

If it helps, the belt clip on Nite Ize cases also works well on the top of pants, and skirts as well (I assume, lol).

I even use the case if I put the phone in a coat pocket.

She seems determined to hate the device, so my only advice would be to move as much of her stuff as is possible onto whatever SD card she has in her current device, and put that into the new device first thing.

That is a super smooth transition for pics and media.

Let her set the thing up- if she is determined to hate it, then it may as well be her fault, lol.
(Don't let it become YOUR fault!
I have made this mistake myself, just so you know.)

The more she plays with it during the set-up, the more she will learn, and most people don't really hate learning things.

I have never used back-up, so I cannot help with moving app data so that her games and other stuff will all be as she had them before.
That means that without proper back-up, all of the apps will start from zip.
If she has progress saved with Google Play, then there should be no problem.

If there are apps she wants moved that matter not if the data is gone, then I suggest using an apk extractor to get the apks of those apps onto the SD card before you switch it to the new phone.

That way they can be installed right away, and she will have some sort of familliarity right away.

Put this onto the old device, and use it to find and extract the apks of any apps that she wants moved.

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/axp.tool.apkextractor/

Once again, this only will get the core of the app, no data at all.

Also, don't forget that the old device is still extremely useful!
It will work on wi-fi until it or the battery is trashed!

This means that when she gets frustrated with the new device, she can use the old one anywhere she can use wi-fi.
There are free calling apps that will allow her to still use it as a phone- just over wi-fi instead.
This free number can even be used on the new device as well- at the same time- as a second number.

So in the end, show her that she really has not lost anything, only gained much more.

Yes, the device is big.
And I dare say that although weight has not been an issue in the past, it may well become more apparent now.
I have seen some very nice phone wallets that may fit the bill here.
I would look at Wal-Mart first, then others if satisfaction cannot be found.

Oh, and the brand of screen protector and rubber surround have a MADE 4 or M4DE on one of the top corners of the boxes.

I believe that Fellows is the parent brand that makes these items.

Yes, there is a slight gap all the way around the screen.
Sheesh, some people will complain about anything, right?

This gap does at least four things:

1. It greatly aids in the installation, because it gives you something to guide your eyes when centering the protector during installation.

2. It prevents the edges of the protector from being so close to the edges of the screen that it gets caught and peeled back up (or off!).

3. It prevents dirt, dust, and other debris from getting underneath the edges.

4. It allows for more slack in the size specifications during manufacturing, which helps to keep prices lower (less material used, less time dedicated to machine set-up, and less manhours dedicated to quality control.)

Once the protector and rubber surround (they are made to work together) are both installed, the gap is hardly even noticeable.

If you need a self-healing screen protector you can go with Gadgetshieldz which I'm using for the past 2 years! Also, there are no touch and fingerprint sensor issues with this protector!
