Install Gmail Notifier from the marketplace and you will be able to get notifications for EVERY email, not just the first since the last time you opened the stock app. This notifier app just runs along with the stock app, it doesn't stay running in the background, but will produce new notifications everytime. Also, instead of the odd @ symbol google chose, this app places a nifty Gmail envelope icon in your task bar and I believe will place a "x" what ever number of emails which have come in since you last cleared the notifications. I don't know that one for certain yet, as I'm still playing with it, but the developer sounds like a cool guy who would add that in if enough suggest it.

Also, add to this the "Gmail unread count" widget, (also in the market) which replaces the stock shortcut, to produce a count bubble of how many unread gmails you have in your inbox....suh-weet! The widget is customizable in appearance too and you can select different colors, etc.

Remember, to prevent duplicate notifications, disable all notifications from the stock email app by hitting menu> (while the gmail app is open then) settings>disable notifications. oh, and the best part is, both of these apps are FREE!!

Spoke too soon, now "Gmail Unread Count" keeps locking up. May have to shut er down until it gets an update

yeah, I think the Gmail unread count widget is finicky...you have to use just the right settings. I think mine is the 3-D and I did not select widget on "Style," although it does still function as a widget. I also have "HTC Hero compatability" selected.

I did all of the above with one other difference. I chose not to have the label under the icon. I liked the clean look of no label more than anything and have been discussing this in another thread. The app will work for a couple of hours, and then starts to error and this is not from me rebooting.

The only problem I've encountered is needing to reset the widget after soft reset, but that's with sooo many widgets on the Hero.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps its caused from another app conflicting with this one?

I have multiple gmail accounts and use gmail unread for all three. I setup each widget, but a soft reset makes all three of the widgets default to the same name and only opens one account.

Anyone know how to save individual widgets on a soft reset, or is setup required every reboot?

Also...anyone feel like gmail unread is wasting battery? I feel like my bat drains faster with it on.
