Root How does OC not kill battery?

I always see people on this forum talking about having their phones rooted with the processor overclocked to 1+ ghz. The droid battery already has trouble lasting a day, how does overclocking not kill the battery extremely quickly?

Or does it and people decide it's worth it?

SetCPU has a governor so that the CPU runs as fast as it needs to, up to the max that you set. It also allows for the processor to run slower when it doesn't need to. Additionally, the sleep/standby profile allows you to underclock it when it is not in use. I think these two things are adequate to negate any battery loss due to overclocking. At least that has been my experience.

And then there are users like me who don't give a rip and buy two extra batteries! I never leave my house without at least one extra fully-charged battery.

But... lest I paint a false picture here... I am continuously streaming Rhapsody, Slacker Radio, or DroidLive almost all the time (10+ hours a day on average), as well as a LOT of talking. I work 10 to 13 hours a day usually, so you can see that no matter what, having just one battery would in no way work for me. I'm sure Verizon hates me for it.

Totally agree. And to be honest, I haven't yet installed Setcpu (but I fully intend to), but even without it, rooting and overclocking is entirely worth whatever negligible difference in battery life there is as a result. Rooting has completely changed my Droid for the better.

If I had a charger to slide my battery into to let it charge, I'd consider that. Otherwise, I'd have to remove the second battery after it charges so that I could charge the other battery.

Actually, 800 MHz is the clock speed rated best for battery life. My logic is that if you run fast enough, you keep your display on less due to the fact that you don't need it as much and display uses more than the processor. However, that's just speculation, and I could be wrong.

I got my free-standing battery charger through Verizon the day I bought my Droid. It trickle-charges, not a fast charge at all, about 4 hours, so you have to remember to slide a battery in it whenever one depletes. Does the job, though.

Seido makes a charger that a battery slides into, and also had a port for the charger for your device.

Last week, while searching Amazon dotcom for a spare battery, I found this desktop dock by Orion for ~$24 shipped that also has a slot to charge a spare batt., and this OEM batt. for just over $10 shipped. Ordered them both but they're not here yet so can't vouch for quality of dock yet... btw, it has the magnet so it works same as Moto dock.

Most overclocked kernels are actually low voltage kernels, too, so many actually get better battery life and run cooler than the stock kernel, even if they have up to 2x the default clock speed (550mhz).

I'm currently running a 1200mhz low voltage kernel that a guy over at the CM forums compiled, using set CPU to govern it between 800-1200mhz, and dropping it to 250mhz when on standby (ie, screen turned off).

I can go at least 16-20 hours without needing a charge, depending on usage.
