Does anyone know whether a rooted Desire will receive an OTA update? I'm guessing now that because I'm running an unbranded ROM I should get the update quicker than if it had to come from T-Mobile? Also when I install the update will my phone stay rooted? If not what will happen to my apps, will I lose them all and have to re-install them as they are all installed on my SD card because of Apps2SD?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm an Android newbie!

Cheers

It won't get an OTA update. You'll have to upgrade by downloading teh update on the HTC site

Also, regarding updates from the HTC website. Are those only available for people with unbranded phones?

I've got an HTC Desire from the Dutch T-Mobile. But it doesn't actually have any branding on it. It shows T-Mobile NL on the locked-screen bar and on the notification bar when pulled down, but I'm assuming those are just to signify what carrier the phone is currently using.

Would I be able to get the update from the HTC site as well, or do I need to wait for T-Mobile NL to come out with one?

If its unbranded I would guess you can install the HTC one. But it won't let you download it unless its suitable for your phone anyway

Yeah that's their 'official' response but that rumour got out that they are going for June.. So everyone is hanging on to that hope. I'm not sure how much longer I can take these low memory warnings! Even so I hear applications need to be tweaked (not re-written?) to work with Android 2.2 so the delay from that perspective is not a bad thing and should allow some applications to catch up.

Actualy some of my apps have already had an update where it says they've added apps to sd for Android 2.2. Not that I can use it of cause, being on 2.1 and all.

am i right in thinking that when htc release an update, it won't be a general update for all their phones but one specificalyl for the desire (and other devices each with their own specific updates), because I'd rather wait out an extra month if they sort out desire specific issues such as video/audio sync, facebook contact display pics being frankly awful, the ability to link a contact with facebook WITHOUT forcing the facebook pic as the contact display pic, and so on. these are all desire specific issues, and are they likely to throw it all into one bundled froyo+desire issues update?

i know htc suck for releasing android updates quickly, but what are they like for addressing device specific issues like the ones I have mentioned?

off topic but with your rooted phone and having apps running from sd, do you notice any lag? better battery life?

indirectly i'm asking about the class of the sd card really. which one are you using lekky?

That I a good question - I have been wondering about SD card speeds. I am about to buy a 32gb which is a class2 card as that is about as fast as they go at the moment. For a 16gb you can get class4 or even faster. Will that make much difference?

Marty.

I think you are better off going for a quality brand such as San Disk even if it is marked as class2.

Yeah, the only difference now is HTC are saying it, not users ;)

Well its easy to root it, then its not an issue :p

HTC are saying second half of 2010. This user was asking about the June date - which CANNOT be confirmed as yet. Tweets were coming from the HTC Europe twitter account regarding Hero updates in November of last year.

I'm trying to remain positive - but you have to be cautious if your decision to invest is based on 2.2 being available in June.

It's a strange time for Android. The highstreet in the UK is starting to get behind the platform - which is brilliant. However, try explaining to an average user who's run out of rom to install apps that he/she needs to root their phone.
Froyo is an important update to bring Android into the mainstream properly. Rooting is not an acceptable "fix" for a lot of users.
